Once you have decided on the frame format, you need to start choosing the roof. Of course, the simplest option is to use rigid sheets of various origins, for example, metal tiles, polycarbonate, slate, etc. If you use roofing felt, then such a construction will be economical, but, on the other hand, it is necessary to take into account what is required install a rafter system, which is also needed for soft metal tiles.

Optimal dimensions for the design

The parameters of a carport can be different, depending on various factors: the size of the car, their number, and the availability of sufficient space for construction. For passenger cars, you can build a carport measuring 5 x 2.3 m. If we talk about a universal structure that is suitable for SUVs, crossovers and minibuses, then parameters of 6.6-3.6 m are suitable. Using polycarbonate for construction

Before starting construction, it is necessary to prepare the following materials and tools:

  • metal profile and pipes;
  • Bulgarian;
  • polycarbonate;
  • a set of nuts and additional fasteners;
  • sand, water, crushed stone, cement, paint.

First you need to choose a place for construction, install posts around the perimeter and tighten the rope. All work should be carried out strictly according to the previously prepared drawing. Then you need to make a pit 20-30 centimeters deep. Dig holes on the sides for support pillars from 70 centimeters to one meter, depending on the groundwater level.

Cover everything with a 10-centimeter layer of sand and crushed stone and compact it. After this, it is necessary to make a grid of reinforcement to reinforce the concrete. You also need to build formwork around the entire perimeter of the site and the pillar pits. Separately install reinforcement for the support pillars. When all the reinforcement is tied and in place, pour a 10-centimeter layer of concrete.

A week after pouring the foundation, you can begin work on installing the frame and roof. Using brackets, attach the support pipes or profile to the pre-cast foundation pillars. Then you need to check the height of the pillars and if the required slope angle is not obtained, then we trim them using a grinder.

Once the support posts are attached, you can make the top trim. For this, a metal profile of 40x40 millimeters is used. The strapping needs to be welded to the base, then the stiffening ribs of the rafter system, as well as the rafters themselves, must be welded. The distance between them should be approximately 1 meter. After installing and fastening all frame parts, protect the welding points and completely paint the structure.

A few hours after the paint has dried, you need to start attaching the polycarbonate. To do this, you can use special press nuts.

At this point, the construction work to create a carport can be considered completed. With competent calculations and the purchase of the necessary material, the entire process will not take much time, and the car will be reliably protected from weather conditions.

Often, the construction of a carport in the presence of a full-fledged garage is driven by the fact that there will be another car in the yard for a long time, for example, from relatives or a broken one.   • Step 1. Remove the top fertile layer (usually 50-60 cm).
  • Step 2: Lay down geotextiles for road work (not roofing or other) that will allow water to pass through.
  • Step 3. Pour a 10 cm layer of crushed stone, preferably dolomite, which subsequently forms one solid slab. The suitable fraction is 20/40. Compact the crushed stone well.
  • Step 4. Place a 10 cm layer of sand on top of the crushed stone and compact it as well. Spill the sand so that it settles well.
  • Step 5. Organize the outer layer so that sand also does not spread around the area and is not carried into the house. Asphalt, concrete, cobblestone, crushed stone and paving slabs are well suited as such a layer. Another option is a geogrid or lawn grid, in which crushed stone and soil for the lawn are filled.

Be especially careful if the soil on your site is clayey and the groundwater is quite close to the surface. In this case, to prevent the crushed stone from “drowning” in the ground in 2-3 years, simply do not skimp on geotextiles.

Review of frame and roof materials

So, let's move on to the construction of the frame itself. Today, the canopy is most often made from the following materials:

If you decide to make fashionable twisted masonry, then this is where the bricks of the second row are turned 90°, and as a result, the seams of the first row are at the level of the middle axis of the bricks of the second.

At the same time, use a rope or a very long stick to check the horizontal plane of all the pillars - they should be at the same height and be level on their own. That is why it is advisable to lay the pillars at the same time, one row at a time. When you have completely built each pillar, check it with a building level.

If you have to cut bricks, cut them only so carefully that no chips form anywhere. Also, if you plan to fix any decor in the pillars, such as colored pebbles or glass inserts, they need to be installed in the seams before the solution dries. It is also common for lighting to be installed for a canopy directly into the poles, then think about this point in advance, because the cable will have to be lifted simultaneously with the masonry.

Mobility and minimum costs: PVC pipes and available materials

And finally, if you only need a carport temporarily, or you have chosen a project that is too expensive and takes a lot of time to implement, then a PVC pipe awning would be a good option.

The main advantage of this design is mobility. Today we decided to park the guest car here, and tomorrow we decided that it would be in the way and it would be better to move it along with the canopy a little further.

For this undertaking, you will only need transparent plastic bottles, water, paint of different colors (you can use regular gouache), wooden stands and a strong rope.

The installation instructions themselves are brilliantly simple:

  • Step 1. First prepare the bottles: pour a little water into the bottom of each, tint it in the desired color and fill it with decorative decorations if desired.
  • Step 2. Next, make holes in the caps of plastic bottles and thread ropes through them. Tie them from the inside, making a knot.

As you can see, the foundation here is columnar. To make it, you need to dig holes with a drill, insert asbestos-cement pipes into them and fill them with concrete. At the same stage, install electricity if you plan to use the workshop in the evening (and you will need to connect the same tools somewhere).

It will also be convenient to heat such a workshop with electricity. And finally, think about how you will insulate such a room: polystyrene foam, mineral wool or similar materials.

Once the floor and walls of the workshop are laid, proceed to installing the ceiling beams. Install the ceiling and insulate the partition. The fact is that in this case the roof of the canopy will also have to be insulated, because one of the rooms is already almost residential.

Canopy design


Our canopy has dimensions of about 900x750 cm. The plane of each will be about 500x750 cm. In general, it is 1000x750 cm, i.e. 75 m2 total area.

Concrete pillars with a diameter of about 300 mm will perfectly cope with the function of supports for such a canopy. Each of these supports can withstand an average of 1 ton of weight. In practice, this value is even more impressive, but we will trust the approved standards.

We multiply the total area of ​​the roof slopes by the value of the snow load for our region, add the weight of the roof itself to the result, divide the calculated number by 1000 kg and find that to ensure proper stability of a canopy of this size it is necessary to install about 7.5 pillars. We surround in a larger direction, i.e. up to 8. As a result, we will install one support in the corners of the canopy and one post in the center of each span.

We will immerse the supports to a depth of about 1.2 m. With such a foundation, the canopy will definitely not fail.


Prices for various types of timber

Building a canopy: step-by-step instructions

First step. We make recesses for installing supports. A drill with a diameter of 30 cm will help us with this. It is better to use an automated drilling rig - drilling more than a meter deep manually is long and difficult. Along the way, we take out stones and other interfering objects that come across our path.


Second step. The recesses are ready. We make formwork for pillars from special paper tubes - sold in modern construction stores. As a result, the pipes will form beautiful columns 30-50 cm high above the ground.

Third step.. The easiest way is to buy ready-made dry mixture in bags and dilute it with water according to the instructions.


Fourth step. We fill the columns. We insert brackets into the fresh concrete for further fixation of wooden posts with a cross-section of 15x15 cm.






Fifth step. We cut timber and boards according to the dimensions of the elements of our canopy. Everything is perfectly visible in the photographs.

Sixth step. We install and secure the support posts on concrete pillars. It is recommended to do this no earlier than 3-4 weeks after pouring.



Seventh step. We attach the boards of the upper supporting frame to the vertical posts. To do this, we use a double board 30 cm wide and 4 cm thick. An ordinary untreated board will do - it will be under the roof and bad weather will not harm the wood in any way.









To connect the boards to the beams, we use bolts with a diameter of 1 cm with a minimum of 20 mm and washers.

Seventh step. We add a second load-bearing board to the main pillars and tighten all structural elements with bolts. We make braces from 10x10 cm posts.

Eighth step. Assembling roof trusses. For their manufacture, a board 10 cm wide and 4 cm thick is suitable. The design is standard and has the shape of a triangle. For greater rigidity, we fix intermediate veins made of bursa or boards inside the triangle. It is more convenient to assemble the trusses on the ground, and then attach them to the harness in finished form.





Ninth step. We cover the installed trusses with boards. The recommended sheathing thickness is 1.2 cm.



Tenth step. We cover the roof with metal tiles or other material at our discretion. Should first be attached to the sheathing

Eleventh step. We cover the roof gables of our shed with siding, clapboard or other material of your choice. If desired, we can attach cross members to the vertical supports and sheathe the entire canopy - this point is left at the discretion of the owner.

Installing drainage

It will be plastic.

Important note! Plastic is subject to thermal expansion. To compensate for deformations, a movable joint must be made every 8 m of the pipe length. If you are going to secure the drain using sealant adhesive, make a connection with a rubber seal every 8 m. This will be enough to compensate for temperature deformations.


We will install the system so that the receiving hole is located at the bottom of the roof slope of our canopy. We select the side of the roof, focusing on the location of the ditch for receiving waste.

First step. We attach the hook holders. We install the gutter with a slope in the direction of the water inlet. To ensure the required slope of the gutter, we use holder hooks. We install them with a minimum 0.5-centimeter slope for each meter of the length of the drainage structure. Markings for installing hooks are carried out as follows:

  • We find the lower or upper point of the storm drain for mounting the extreme bracket. The extreme brackets are installed at a distance of 100 mm from the edges of the water intake;
  • knowing the required length of the system, we retreat from the extreme point a distance equal to 0.5 mm multiplied by the total length of the gutter in meters. Mark the second point;
  • we stretch the rope between the two marks and fasten the hooks, focusing on it;
  • We install hooks in half-meter increments.


Second step. We adjust the length of the pipe. Cut off the excess using a hacksaw. Clean off the shavings with a sharp knife. We saw off so that the geometry of the pipe cross-section is not disturbed during the cutting process.

Third step. We install the pipe on the hooks. If we use plastic hooks, we first insert the back edge of our gutter into the recess on the fastener, and then lower the front edge of the pipe and press. As a result, the gutter will snap into place and simply lock into place.


When installing on metal fasteners, first lay the gutter on the fasteners and bend the flexible petals so that they cover the pipe.

Fourth step. We install the funnel. We cut a hole in the desired place in the gutter and attach a funnel to it from below. We will fix it using glue. To do this, we first clean the surfaces, liberally apply the adhesive composition to the joining elements, wait for the mixture to dry, and then coat the additional seam.

Important! Gluing can only be done with special compounds for PVC.


Fifth step. We assemble pipes and elbows into a single drainage system. With the help of elbows we can set the desired direction of our pipe. At the joints of pipes and elbows we install an additional fastening clamp.

The direct connection of pipes and elbows is made using glue. The procedure for its use was discussed above. We install pipe holders in 2 m increments.

In conclusion, all we have to do is cover the gables of the canopy roof with siding, clapboard or other material of our choice. If desired, we can attach crossbars to the vertical supports and sheathe the entire canopy - this point is left at the discretion of the owner.

The canopy is ready. We can accept it for permanent use.

To shelter the car from bad weather, bird “gifts”, direct sun and autumn foliage, you can build a canopy. It's easy, reliable and profitable. Nowadays, you can choose a carport design to suit every taste and imagination: different shapes, dimensions, materials used.

To build a canopy on your own, you need to know certain technical nuances, all the pros and cons of the structure, and the preferences of the materials used.

Canopy options

A canopy is a small architectural structure consisting of supporting parts, a roof and space for a car.

Basically, it is located near the house, so it should be made in the same style as the exterior. The photo shows various options for carports.

Selection of materials

Various materials can be used to construct a canopy:

Tree

The construction of a structure made of wood is simple; all you need is a regular set of tools.

However, the structure is highly flammable, so it is necessary to use antiseptic and fire-resistant agents for processing.

Metal

The frame is made forged or welded from metal profiles. For construction you will need welded equipment and some experience, otherwise it is better to entrust it to professionals.

The disadvantage of a metal structure is that it is subject to corrosion, which means additional protection from moisture is required.

Stone, concrete or bricks

A bulky option, but it does not require various materials processing and is not difficult to use.

Types of roofs

Single-pitch

The easiest way to install a carport for parking a car. The most complex elements of this design are the tying of the pillars (mauerlat) and the installation of rafters, designed for sufficient force loads (wind, snow).

When the distance between supports is up to 4.5 m, the installation of additional supports is not required; more than 4.5 m, they will have to be installed. The slope of the roof slope must be at least 25 degrees.

Helpful advice: if the slope is 25 degrees, the length of the canopy is 5.0 m, then the last supports will be 1.5 m higher than the first ones, i.e. for 1 m of length 0.3 m of height is added: 5x0.3 = 1.5 m.

Gable or hip

A more bulky and complex multifunctional design: on the first tier there can be parking for a car, on the second - a veranda.

For a roof with one slope and rafters, different types of materials are used. For example: corrugated sheeting, roofing felt, ondulin, etc.

For an arched roof, the ideal material would be polycarbonate. An arched roof is a welded structure made of arc-shaped or forged metal.

Load-bearing elements must be properly designed for strength and structural form. Polycarbonate canopies do not burden the appearance of the site as a whole; they are inconspicuous and light.

Mobile option

Folding canopies have a metal frame and a tent roof. For its simple assembly, a couple of people and a couple of hours for the work process are enough.

Suitable for outdoor picnics or trips to the country. If desired, you can install awning walls or soft glass on the sides.

Arrangement of space for the car

The parking lot can be covered with crushed stone, concrete, stone or sidewalk tiles.

For a long period of its use, the site requires preparation. The layer of earth is removed, the sand and crushed stone layers are filled in, and compaction is performed.

Make sure there is a slope on the site and a drainage system. The platform should be located at the same level with the surface of the earth; if it is elevated, it is worthwhile to provide a place for descent.

The canopy can be installed separately or as an extension to a house or other structure. Which canopy option is best for you to choose, but it’s worth considering some nuances:

  • wooden - fire hazard and can rot;
  • metal – susceptible to rust;
  • brick or stone - requires work skills and its cost is higher.
  • roofing made of roofing felt is inexpensive, but installation involves lathing the rafter system;
  • polycarbonate, like corrugated sheeting, is a more acceptable roofing option in terms of price, quality, and design. But corrugated sheeting can be damaged by corrosion.

Technical aspects

To construct wooden supports, you will need beams (150x150, 100x100 mm) or cylindrical wood (radius 150-200 mm).

For metal supports: round pipe 100 mm or square pipe 80x80 mm. The gap between them will be from 1.5 to 2 m.

To construct the purlins you will need: a rectangular pipe 40x80 mm or 80x80 mm (for large-scale canopies). Mauerlat: square pipe 100x100 or 150x150 mm. For the sheathing - a 40x40 mm pipe, for the rafters - a 100x40 mm board.

Dimensions

For a medium-sized car, an area of ​​5x2.3 m is sufficient, for large ones such as crossovers or minibuses - 6.6x3.6 m. Two cars will fit perfectly on an area of ​​6.3x5.9 m.

A size from 1.9 to 2.2 m will be sufficient height, which will protect the car from possible precipitation.

The standards provide for the following canopy dimensions:

  • length is 1 m longer than the length of the machine,
  • the width is 1-2 m more, for two units - 2.8 m (1 m on the sides and 0.8 between them) more than their total width.

How to make a polycarbonate carport

This option involves installing a metal canopy with a pitched polycarbonate roof.

The site is fenced at a predetermined location. A layer of earth 300 mm deep is cut out. From the sides, at a distance of 1.5-2 m, recesses are dug for supports to a depth of 700-1000 mm. It is worth considering the presence of groundwater and soil characteristics.

Sand and crushed stone (about 100 mm) are poured into the bottom and compacted. The formwork and frame for the slab are made from rods with a diameter of 8 to 12 mm and cell sizes of 100x100, 200x200 mm.

Reinforcement of supports is carried out separately. About 200 mm of concrete mixture is poured into the recesses and ready-made supporting elements are inserted. Next, concrete 100 mm thick is poured.

When the concrete has hardened, we move on to further work. We make strapping along the tops of the supports by welding a 40x40 mm metal profile to the base. We fix the auxiliary harness at an angle of 90 degrees. to the supports. We get the shape of a right triangle.

Using welding, we secure the rafter stiffeners. We lay square metal rafters at right angles at a distance of 800-1200 mm. We weld a canopy over the edge of the trim.

All parts are cleaned and washed with solvent. Dry it. Apply primer and paint.

We cover the rafters with polycarbonate material, which is secured with press nuts to prevent moisture from seeping in, at a distance of 300-400 mm from each other. We seal the edges with special strips for the ends.

The sides of the canopy can be covered with a wooden lattice, awning curtains, etc.

Building a carport for your car is a good modern, economical solution, thanks to which you can protect your vehicle from exposure to precipitation, ultraviolet rays and mechanical stress, and on the other hand, save on building a garage. When building a carport with your own hands, you need to take into account some nuances: for example, the base must support the weight of the car, and the support pillars must be positioned in such a way as not to impede the entry of the car into the site and not interfere with the entry/exit of the car for the driver and passengers.

Scheme

At the beginning of the construction of a carport, you need to prepare drawings, mark the proposed parking area at your summer cottage, level it, remove the top layer of earth by 30-45 cm. Most often, a concrete base is poured on a gravel bed, which can be reinforced with one or two contours of reinforcing mesh. You can use regular compacted gravel. Also, the parking area is laid out with paving stones or tiles. When the base is poured, the embedded parts are immediately installed into it, to which the support pillars will be attached. Assembling a wooden frame

To create the simplest, lightest, most durable canopy, it is most convenient to use a wooden frame. What parts will be needed to build a canopy will be shown in the design drawing.

To do this, you need to purchase boards made of hard, durable wood. Of course, the strongest and most weather-resistant material is larch, which only increases its strength characteristics from exposure to moisture.

But larch is an expensive material, so for a more economical solution you can use pine or spruce boards, which require more careful treatment with protective impregnations and antiseptics.

In our case, we install a canopy attached to the wall of the building. It is easier to make such a structure yourself, because part of the structure rests on the house. To construct the frame, places for installing supports are marked, or they are mounted in already installed embedded parts. The supports must have pre-prepared grooves for mounting horizontal beams. The supports located near the wall are additionally fixed to it using a screwdriver. The supports are installed opposite each other, first on one side, then on the opposite. The number of supports and the pitch between them depends on the length of the car.

After you have checked the verticality and compliance of the heights of the supports, you can begin laying a horizontal beam on them. First, fasteners are mounted to both beams to secure the sheathing at the same distance from each other.

The first beam is placed on supports in the grooves on the wall side and checked with a level to be horizontal.

After which it is fixed to the wall and supports with anchor bolts. On the opposite side, the beam will additionally be supported by spacers (see photo), which are attached to the supports at one end and to the beam at the other. For these works, the best assistant will be a screwdriver.

Horizontal cross members of the sheathing are laid on the beams. They are fixed to the beams using fasteners.

The crossbars on the outside should extend beyond the beams by 10-15 cm.

For additional strength, pairs of outer beams are connected by additional spacers.

The result should be a strong, stable frame. At the end, the protruding ends of the crossbars are covered with boards.
