The Gospel of the Devil is an occult treatise on interacting with higher powers to gain power, knowledge and authority. The book presents occult philosophy, demonic hierarchy, gives the keys to calling demonic forces and rituals. The book is divided into three parts - “The Gospel of Satan”, “The Book of Devils” and “The Book of Witchcraft”, which reflects all aspects of magic - as the art of changing the soul, as the science of changing reality and as the craft of energetic influence on people.

Satan and his faces

Satan (from Hebrew śāṭān - “enemy”) is the first force of creation that emerged from Chaos long before the creation of the worlds. Satan is the oldest of the gods, the first generation of Darkness - the mother of all things.

The Bible presents us with Satan as the enemy of God, the Serpent who tempted the first people, the Prince of Darkness and the Spirit of Evil. But the key to understanding the image of Satan lies much deeper. Satan is not only the enemy of God, but also the Universal balancing force of existence. This is the force of division and opposition necessary for the existence of the material Universe.

Satan is the Spirit of struggle and movement, which is the essence of life itself. This force, the spark of Chaos, is present throughout the Universe and inside each of us, because the law of magic of Hermes Trismegistus says: “As above, so below.”

According to the teachings of the Gnostics, man consists of three elements - body, soul, Spirit. If the body and soul were created by the creator of the material earth, then the Spirit is the substance of Chaos. This is the divine spark, thanks to which a person became who he is. Without it, a person is just an animal. Man owes such a rapid evolution precisely to this Force, which not only revives, but also spiritualizes empty matter.

The ancient Greeks knew that in addition to all the known gods, there was another God, unidentified, unknown and incomprehensible, higher and more perfect, living in the halls of Chaos. They called this nameless God of the Universe Agnostos Theos. We call him Satan, but it is worth clarifying that Satan is not a name at all, but only a title of a deity, which translates as “enemy.” Satan is a stream that manifests itself through the gods of Darkness and Chaos known to us. The true name of God is known only to a select few. He is essentially an enemy, since he does not belong to the material plane and is the embodiment of Chaos. The Gnostics believed that this unknowable god is the true God of the Universe, who sometimes penetrates into our material Universe through his messengers. Thanks to the flows of Chaos, our world is dynamic, not static. Chaos provides the necessary novelty, which is necessary for evolution and the continuation of life. Chaos spins the wheel of life.

The cult of the enemy is present in almost all religions and mystical traditions. Satan has appeared to us under different faces and names throughout time. We use the ancient Semitic name “Satan” for ease of understanding within the framework of the Judeo-Christian tradition. His personifications were the Egyptian Set or the snake Sata, the Zoroastrian Ahriman, the Greek Typhon, the Hindu Shiva, the luminous Lucifer and many other gods - opponents of order.

In the image of Satan and his other incarnations, the symbols of the Snake, Darkness, Chaos and Flame can often be traced. The snake is one of the oldest symbols of wisdom and vitality, represented in almost all mythologies of the world. The very structure of human DNA, the basis of life, is similar to that of a snake. The serpent is the power of life and healing. The goal of a Satanist is to awaken the serpentine power within himself. It was not for nothing that the priests of Egypt and Babylon called themselves the Sons of the Serpent. In Egyptian iconography, images of the creator god in the form of a huge serpent are often found. A snake biting its tail means the cyclicality and continuity of life, wrapping itself around the world egg - endless potential and the unity of opposites. The serpent is the one who existed before the creation of the worlds and the one who will remain after their destruction. The serpent symbolizes the male fertilizing force, so it was the eternal companion of women. Also represents chthonic forces, since it resides underground. Prince of Darkness is one of Satan's titles. This is the most powerful and ancient force of creation and destruction. The connection with the destructive Forces of Chaos and Darkness emphasizes its ancient anti-cosmic nature. But it is worth noting that Darkness is not identical to evil. Everything that was came out of the Darkness, and everything that is returns to it. Darkness is the infinite potential of the Universe.

Satan is often associated with fire and heat. It is no coincidence that Hell and Satan are depicted in flames, and the dragon, a slightly different form of the Serpent, breathes fire. Satan's connection with fire is explained by the fact that fire was one of the first elements from which all others came. Satanic Trinity

In the Bible, Satan is given many conflicting titles, which has led to much confusion about Satan's identity. Who is Satan really - the ancient deity of the Earth and fertility, a fallen angel, the luminous spirit of knowledge and freedom, or the Dark Devil - the lord of passions and vices? Based on biblical texts, completely different concepts of the perception of Satan arise. He is at the same time the Dark Deity of ancient peoples, a fallen angel bringing people the light of divine knowledge, an angel of divine retribution and a voluptuous Devil who tempts people.

The essence of Satan is so large-scale and contradictory that its full understanding is inaccessible to human consciousness. He manifests himself on different planes of existence and everyone perceives his face according to the development of his Spirit. For people under the power of vices, he is the tempting and punishing Devil, for those who have come to terms with their instincts and accepted them as part of themselves, he is the embodiment of the dark side of nature, the one who strives for knowledge and has subordinated their instincts to reason, perceives Satan as the luminous Lucifer, bestowing secret and forbidden knowledge. For the chosen initiates he is the anti-cosmic spirit, and his flame is the spark of all life.

The lowest and darkest manifestation of Satan is called the Devil, who, according to legend, tempts people and punishes sinners in Hell. The Lord of Hell and the Prince of Demons, he is the ruler of matter and rules our physical world. He is depicted as beast-like, most often with the head of a Goat. The Wild Goat, as a symbol of lust and freedom, emphasizes the earthly nature of the Devil. This is both the earthly force of fertility and the destructive Power of Darkness. After all, where there is birth, there is death. In this image of the Devil one can trace the attributes and qualities of the ancient Dark Gods, to whom initiates from ancient times served in black rituals and Sabbaths. In man, it manifests itself as an instinctive principle, thanks to which man continues to exist as a species. This is the eternal thirst for life within a person.

Another manifestation of Satan is the Lightbringer Lucifer. Son of the Dawn, rebellious angel, symbol of intransigence and freedom. Lucifer, who rebelled against God, established the right of any being to their own will and the freedom of the Spirit. After all, the essence of any development and evolution is the separation of a particle from the whole. The story of Lucifer is the manifestation of free will, the path to becoming God. In man, Lucifer represents the rational part of the soul.

Lucifer is the patron saint of scientists, magicians and all those who long to know the secret laws of the universe. In man, Lucifer manifests himself as a thirst for knowledge and freedom. People who have not risen above their instinctive nature cannot perceive it and burn in the Darkness of the Devil’s vices. Those who dared to lift the veil of the mysteries of the universe and defeated earthly vices perceive Satan as Lucifer - the spirit of light and progress.

The highest manifestation of Satan is the anti-cosmic spirit of Satan, which represents the eternal flame of life. This flame flares up in every living creature at the very conception from the Darkness of non-existence, it burns inside every living person and supports his life. This is the power of the human Spirit. Only the chosen ones are able to perceive this power, who not only defeated their own vices and comprehended the laws of nature, but also discovered the divine principle within themselves, accepting the will of their Spirit. They support the inner flame, connecting it with the eternal flame of Satan, becoming immortal.

Magical art - Satan's gift to man - manifests itself, accordingly, at different levels of the deity's channel. Low magic, or witchcraft, occurs under the auspices of the Devil. This is a chthonic force that destroys and creates. The key to this power is thirst.

High magic, or the Great Work, is the path of Lucifer. This is the knowledge of the laws of nature, the manifestation of one’s own will, gaining independence and becoming a god.

Having passed all these tests, the adept becomes a Master and an incarnate god, discovering the immortal principle within himself, and cognizes the anti-cosmic Spirit of Satan.

Laws of Satan

In every one who rebels against injustice the spirit of Satan burns, in every thirsty person the flame of the Devil burns. So be blessed, not cursed. Be in joy and not in sin, be strong and not humble, and you will receive good and not punishment, for Satan is the God of Joy and Strength. Do not be cruel, but be fair and give to everyone according to his deeds. Do not remain silent in response to atrocities, for by doing so you multiply them. Satan is the God of the worthy, but not of the weak. Satan does not create dogmas and commandments for you, for animals need a stall and a chain, and you are people. Be worthy among the worthy by accepting the laws of Satan:

2. Do not bow down before anyone, for Satan gave you the inheritance of the gods and made you equal to them.

Thirteen nights - thirteen ritual murders. Thirteen crucified nuns. From the morning when the Beast took possession of the Boltsan monastery at dawn, this killer fed on the flesh and souls of the servants of the Lord.

Mother Isolde was already falling asleep, but suddenly she heard footsteps on the stairs that led to the basements. She held her breath and listened. Somewhere far away in the darkness a voice sounded - a child's voice, full of tears, calling her from the top of the stairs. The old nun shivered so that her teeth chattered, but not from the cold: in her shelter it was warm and damp. It was the voice of Sister Braganza, the youngest novice of the convent. Braganza begged Isolde's mother to tell her where she had hidden, she prayed that Isolde would allow her to hide there from the killer who was chasing her. And she repeated in a voice broken from tears that she did not want to die. But she buried Sister Braganza this morning with her own hands. She buried a small canvas bag with everything that remained of the corpse of Braganza, killed by the Beast, in the soft earth of the cemetery.

Tears of horror and grief flowed down the old nun's cheeks. She covered her ears with her hands so that she could no longer hear Braganza’s cry, closed her eyes and began to pray to God to call her to him.

It all started a few weeks earlier when rumors arose that there was a flood in Venice and thousands of rats ran out onto the embankments of the canals of this watery city. They said that these rodents had gone crazy from some unknown disease and were attacking people and dogs. This clawed and fanged army filled the lagoons from the island of Giudecca to the island of San Michele and moved deeper into the alleys.

Alas, thirteen days after the flood, the flames of the first bonfires rose into the sky of Venice, and gondolas loaded with corpses floated along the canals to collect dead children whom crying mothers threw down from the windows.

At the end of this terrible week, the nobles of Venice sent their soldiers against the Doge's guards, who were still guarding the bridges. That same night, an evil wind flying in from the sea prevented the dogs from sniffing out the people fleeing the city through the fields. The rulers of Mestre and Padua urgently sent hundreds of archers and crossbowmen to stop the flow of dying people that was spreading across the mainland. But neither the shower of arrows nor the crackle of rifle shots (some of the shooters had arquebuses) prevented the pestilence from spreading across the Veneto region like wildfire.

The book left mixed impressions, but nevertheless I don’t regret reading it.
Yes, I clearly see that the book is not without its shortcomings, there are obvious linguistic roughnesses in the narrative, and the logic and meaning are periodically lame, and (especially in the second half of the book) there is a feeling that the author has “been too clever,” but I forgive the author for this due to the fact that this is his debut novel (it’s a pity that so far it’s only the only one translated into Russian). The only thing that bothered me about almost the entire book is that the author writes half the book using the present tense narration technique." she sits down in a chair, closes her eyes, he comes up from behind, etc.". This is my personal quirk - “I hate to tolerate” this style of narration, and here this technique was very out of topic. I tried to speak the text in chunks in the “simple past” - everything immediately sounds much better, so I tried to imagine that everything that's how it's written.
Doesn’t the very title of the book “The Gospel of Satan” give you goosebumps? For me, yes, and I’m telling you that while reading I repeatedly cringed and wrapped myself more tightly in the blanket, and I’m such a thick-skinned reader of thrillers!
And the story being described began many, many years, or rather centuries ago... Jesus Christ was, as is customary, crucified on the cross, but during his execution he lost his God. In the literal sense - a wounded and dying man opened his eyes, saw a crowd of raging trash around him and realized that it was for these nonentities that he had to accept martyrdom! And he cursed people, cursed God and became a servant of Satan. Above the cross of Christ, Pontius Pilate ordered to nail a sign with the inscription INRI, this is an abbreviation from Latin "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum", What means: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. So, Christ died cursing God and went to hell. And the inscription INRI received a second interpretation, adherents of dark forces buried the body of Christ in a secret cave, and INRI began to mean Ianus Nazarenus Rex Infernorum, which can be translated as "Janus of Nazareth, King of Hell."
Here is a secret manuscript describing these events and became a kind of Gospel from Satan, and became the greatest secret of the church and the greatest “cursed” book that destroyed the lives of hundreds of people who touched this secret. For centuries, the manuscript was either considered lost or found, and its copies (like the remains of the executed Jesus-Janus) were kept in the monasteries of a special order of hermits who did not allow anyone to visit them and lived as secluded as possible.
But periodically the book floated to the surface of history, and as soon as this happened, the world was shocked by terrible cataclysms.
But now let's go back to our time. Maria Sparks is an FBI profiler, tracking down maniacs. Her peculiarity lies in her special gift - after a terrible car accident she received the gift of a medium, she is able to see crimes, see victims and killers. And then one day she gets on the trail of a serial maniac, goes to his lair and in a cave sees a terrible picture - 4 previously missing young women crucified on a cross, and a 5th dying police officer. During the capture, the criminal seems to be killed, but during the autopsy of the killer, who called himself Caleb, Sparks realizes that there are a lot of strange things in this case. And the deeper she goes into her investigation and her visions, the more she realizes that Caleb is something eternal, mystical, and that he has been killing for centuries.
In the investigation, Maria Sparks meets with the priest Alfonso Carzo, who is also not quite an ordinary servant of the Lord. He is an employee of the secret department of the Vatican called the Congregation of Miracles, and he is engaged in exorcism, that is, driving out evil spirits from the possessed. And Karzo is seriously concerned that cases of obsession are increasing, and many of them are very difficult to explain.
In parallel with their investigation, clouds are gathering over the Vatican. Adherents of the "dark Jesus" have survived thousands of years and are now members of a secret society called the Thieves of Souls, and not only that, several people occupy the highest positions in the Vatican. The Vatican keeps many secrets, including papers and manuscripts that will never see the light of day, but one of the most terrible secrets of the Vatican is that not all Popes died a natural death. And now the Thieves of Souls are preparing their decisive offensive - the current Pope must die, his place must be taken by “their” man. And the Gospel of Satan must be found, and the entire world community must know that the Holy Church has been lying to them for two millennia.
This is what Patrick Graham came up with, and this is just the beginning. I see that many people compare the book to Dan Brown (my least favorite). Well, what can I say, as for me, despite some similarities (mainly in the fact that the plot is a kind of crypto-history), but this book is better. And if I can torment Brown for many days, then the book constantly just jumped into my hands.
I repeat once again, the book is not perfect at all, there are obvious plot failures and absurdities. I just don’t understand why this Maria Sparks, who seems to be an FBI employee, acts like some kind of spherical horse in a vacuum. The FBI appears in the plot exactly one and a half times; the rest of the time she acts either alone or with her priest partner. Well, you can find fault with little things there, but you don’t want to, because the writing is still dashing, interesting and captivating. By the way, I’m a completely non-religious person, but I love thrillers with religious background, cryptohistory and similar issues, so that’s also why I got along with this book.
I can recommend it to those who love bloodthirsty Frenchmen. Joke. But seriously, if you liked, say, “The Code of Existence” by Case or “Sworn to Darkness” by another bloodthirsty Frenchman, Grange, then this book is worth reading.
