History of University

The founding of the university is associated with the reform of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and higher military education. Kharkov National University of the Air Force was created on the basis of the Kharkov Military University and the Kharkov Institute of the Air Force in accordance with Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated September 10, 2003 No. 1430. The university continued the work of training personnel for aviation at 2 military academies and 9 higher military schools:

  • Kharkov Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots named after. S. I. Gritsevets (1930-1993);
  • Kharkov Higher Military Aviation School of Radio Electronics named after. Lenin Komsomol (1937-1993);
  • Military Engineering Radio Engineering Academy of Air Defense named after. L. A. Govorova (1941-1993);
  • Kharkov Higher Military Command and Engineering School named after. N. I. Krylova (1941-1993);
  • Kharkov Higher Military Aviation Engineering School (1941-1993);
  • Poltava Higher Anti-Aircraft Missile Command School named after. Army General (1941-1995);
  • Chernigov Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots named after. Lenin Komsomol (1941-1995);
  • Military Academy of Air Defense of the Ground Forces named after. A. M. Vasilevsky (1947-1994);
  • Kiev Higher Military Anti-Aircraft Missile Engineering School named after. S. M. Kirov (1937-1994);

A significant part of these military educational institutions were created in the troubled pre-war and fire war years.

Geographically, the university is located in two towns (Sumskaya St. 77/79, Klochkovskaya St., 228). The total area of ​​training and laboratory premises is more than 100 thousand square meters. Training sessions are conducted in classrooms equipped with computer equipment, simulators and operational weapons. The departments' laboratories use modern laboratory facilities that allow for research into various phenomena and processes studied in academic disciplines.

There are 18 computer classes available to cadets and students, of which 3 classes provide access to the World Wide Web. The possibilities of using personal computers in classes and during self-study are constantly expanding. Over the past two years alone, over 200 proprietary software developments have been introduced into the educational process.

To impart practical skills to students in their specialty, the university has a training aviation brigade, a training center, a training ground, a training airfield, an educational complex, a sports complex and other structural units and support units. The university has a unique library, one of the best libraries not only among military educational institutions, but also in the national education system. Its scientific and technical collection includes over 1.3 million publications, and its artistic collection includes over 100 thousand publications. The university printing house is capable of publishing educational publications in a short time. Most of the textbooks and teaching aids used by cadets were prepared by university research and teaching staff.

Kharkov Air Force University is a leading multidisciplinary university with high scientific and pedagogical potential, a powerful educational and material base, capable of training highly qualified military and civilian specialists, as well as modern scientific and pedagogical personnel.

Today, Kharkov Air Force University is the most powerful branch-specific higher military educational institution of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and has the IV level of accreditation.

Further progress in the development of the Kharkov Air Force University is based on integration into the European system of education and science, educating a professionally and socially healthy generation of citizens who are ready for official and labor activities and responsible for the fate of society and the state.

The total number of students at the Kharkov Air Force University is about 5 thousand people. Training of cadets and officers is carried out under government orders, students - under a contract (paid form). Additionally, students can take driver training courses and a reserve officer training program. The form of education for cadets and students is full-time, for officers - full-time and part-time. Graduates receive a state diploma.

The Kharkov Air Force University constantly runs advanced training courses for officers and civil servants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, scientific and pedagogical workers of higher military educational institutions, and language courses.

The birthday of the institute should rightfully be considered November 12, 1930. It was then that the creation of the ninth military aviation school for pilots and observer pilots began in the south-eastern region of Kharkov, north of Rogan station. It is certainly one of the oldest in Ukraine, has a famous history, and is one of the 100 best higher educational institutions in Ukraine.

Kharkov Air Force Institute today- this is a single higher military educational institution of the Air Force of Ukraine, which, thanks to the reorganization of higher educational institutions of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, included the Kharkov and Chernigov Higher Military Aviation Schools of Pilots, the Kharkov and Kiev Higher Military Engineering Schools, the Kharkov Higher Military Aviation School of Radio Electronics, the Lugansk Higher Military Aviation School navigators.

Over the 70-year history of the Kharkov Air Force Institute, 513 graduates were awarded the honorary title of Hero of the Soviet Union, 23 became twice Heroes of the Soviet Union, 22 graduates visited space, 82 were awarded the honorary title “Honored Military Pilot.” Among the graduates are doctors and candidates of science, members of the Academy of Sciences, laureates of State Prizes.
By decree of the President of Ukraine dated November 11, 2000, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of its founding, the institute was named after the outstanding air ace of World War II, three times Hero of the Soviet Union, Air Marshal Ivan Nikitovich Kozhedub.

The team of teachers, workers, doctoral students, adjuncts, listeners, cadets numbers about 4800 people, of which 38 doctors of science, 214 candidates of science, 26 professors, 112 associate professors and 14 senior researchers, over 2000 cadets, listeners and students.

Students are trained on a contract basis, and students from the institute and other higher educational institutions are trained under the reserve officer program.
