Throughout his career, he created interesting and colorful characters. In the story “Taras Bulba” the characters are so textured that they are remembered the first time. Of course, these images are collective and hyperbolic, but no less interesting and vivid.

Characteristics of the heroes of “Taras Bulba”

One of the main characters of the story of the same name is Cossack Taras Bulba. The author describes him as a man of courage, determination and courage. He was a real Zaporozhye Cossack: camaraderie and Christian faith were very important to Bulba all his life. He is no longer young, he occupies a certain position in the Sich. In the episodes of the feast on the occasion of the return of his sons from Bursa, in the scenes of the battle with the Poles, it is clear that Taras Bulba is respected and his advice is listened to. Even those who have only recently come to the Sich see in Bulba a wise and fair warrior. From the first chapters it becomes clear that he is not a family man - his wife rarely sees him, because the Cossack often goes on military campaigns with the Zaporozhye army, and Bulba did not like to stay at home, he believed that this had a bad effect on his character.
For Taras Bulba, the Sich and the fate of his Fatherland came first.

Ostap Bulbenko - eldest son Bulba, together with his brother, graduated from the seminary and after completing their studies returned home. The reader learns about how Ostap showed himself in the seminary from several episodes: Ostap at first did not want to study and tried to escape, but over time he came to his senses. This character truly reveals itself during the campaign against the Poles. Ostap appears before us as a worthy son of his father: a brave, strong Cossack who is endowed with analytical abilities.

Despite the fact that Ostap is captured by the Poles, the Cossack does not lose his composure and the firmness inherent in his character. After the execution scene, the reader has no doubt that Ostap rightfully deserves to be called a real Cossack. The hero goes to the execution place without fear, facing death with dignity.

Listing the main characters of the story “Taras Bulba” one cannot fail to mention Andrie, youngest son old Cossack. He is different from both his brother and his father. We can say that he took a lyrical soul from his mother, and determination and the will to win from his father. We can say that it was this combination that became fatal for the young man.

In military affairs, Andriy did not lag behind his brother, and sometimes did things that not a single Cossack could even think of. The young guy is fascinated by battles, parties, swords, swords, raids - everything that Cossack life consists of. The image of Andriy was created by Gogol in a romantic vein. The reader understands that two opposing principles are fighting in Andria: the desire to love and act according to the dictates of the heart and the desire to serve the native land, to stand guard over freedom and independence.

The characters in Taras Bulba are colorful and expressive.
Each image is described incredibly subtly, so that the reader has a very realistic picture before his eyes. For example, the scene of a trip to the Sich evokes associations with the painting “Bogatyrs” by V. Vasnetsov. Just like on the canvas, three people appear before us: a father and his two sons. They are the same fearless, courageous and brave warriors.

The story "Taras Bulba" is one of the most perfect creations of N.V. Gogol. It cost the writer a lot of work. In the story, Gogol talks about the heroic struggle of the Ukrainian people for their national liberation. The main events take place in

Zaporozhye Sich, in the kingdom of freedom and equality. This is a free republic in which people of broad soul live, absolutely free and equal, where strong and courageous characters are brought up. For people of this nature, there is nothing higher in the world than the interests of the people, than the freedom and independence of the Fatherland. The story perfectly reveals the atmosphere of a powerful popular movement. The image of the main character of the story, Taras Bulba, is remarkable.

The stern and unyielding Taras Bulba leads a full life. adversity and danger. It was not created for a family hearth. His "tenderness" -! an open field and a good horse. Seeing his sons after a long separation, the next day he hurries with them to the Sich, to the Cossacks. This is his true element. Gogol writes about him: “He was all created for abusive anxiety and was distinguished by the brutal directness of his character.”

A man of enormous will and remarkable natural intelligence, touchingly tender to his comrades and merciless to the enemy. He punishes Polish magnates and protects the oppressed and disadvantaged. This is a powerful image, covered in poetic legend, in Gogol’s words: “like an extraordinary phenomenon of Russian strength.”

Taras Bulba is a wise and experienced leader of the Cossack army. He was “distinguished” by his “ability to move troops and strong hatred of his enemies.” At the same time, Taras is not opposed to the environment. He loved the simple life of the Cossacks and did not stand out among them in any way.

The image of Taras embodies the prowess and scope of folk life. This is a man of great intensity of feelings, passions, thoughts. There is nothing selfish, petty, or selfish about him. His soul is imbued with only one desire - for the freedom and independence of his people. That is why he speaks with such hatred about the insignificant souls of traitors: “I know that a vile thing has now begun on our land: they are adopting the devil knows what Busurman customs; they abhor their tongue; they are selling their people...”.

Taras's whole life was inextricably linked with the Sich. He devoted himself completely to serving the comradeship and the Fatherland. Valuing in a person, first of all, his courage and devotion to the ideals of the Sich, he is merciless towards traitors and cowards.

How much courage there is in the behavior of Taras, making his way into enemy territory in the hope of seeing Ostap! The famous scene of the meeting between a father and his eldest son is stunning in its dramatic nature. “Lost in a crowd of strangers, Taras watches as his son is taken to the execution place. What did old Taras feel when he saw his Ostap? “What was in his heart then?” Gogol exclaims. But Taras did not betray his terrible tension in any way. Looking to his son, selflessly enduring fierce torment, he quietly said: “Good, son, good!”

The character of Taras is revealed equally large and expressively in the tragic conflict with Andrei. Love did not bring Andrey happiness; it separated him from his comrades, from his father, from the Fatherland. Even the bravest of the Cossacks would not be forgiven for this, and the seal of a curse fell on the traitor’s brow: “Gone, gone ingloriously, like a vile dog...”. Treason

No one can redeem or justify the Motherland.

The writer depicts the enormous moral superiority of Taras and his comrades over

Andrey. How disgusting is a man who betrayed his homeland! And his life is inglorious, and his death is shameful. Taras, a man of a stern and at the same time gentle soul, does not feel any pity for his traitorous son. Without hesitation, he makes his sentence: “I gave birth to you, I will kill you!” These words of Taras are imbued with the consciousness of the greatest truth of the cause in the name of which he is executing his son.

Creating the heroic image of Taras Bulba, N.V. Gogol does not try to idealize him. It mixes tenderness and rudeness, serious and funny, great and small. Gogol dreamed of a strong, heroic character. This is exactly the image of Taras. It poetically captures the features of the Russian national character. It is not for nothing that Gogol’s immortal story is one of the favorite books of modern people.

The main characters of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol’s story “Taras Bulba”
Main characters Turn around, son! How funny you are! What kind of priestly cassock are you wearing? And that’s how everyone goes to academies? - with these words old Bulba greeted his two sons, who studied at the Kyiv Bursa and came home to their father. This is how N.V. Gogol’s story “Taras Bulba” begins. The main characters of this story are the old Cossack Taras Bulba and his sons Ostap and Andriy

Taras Bulba ♦ He was harsh towards motives other than war and riotous revelry; at least I never thought about anything else. ♦ He was straightforward with his peers.
Taras Bulba ♦ He had kindness in a form in which it could only exist with such a character and at that time. ♦ He faithfully stood for the independence of his Motherland, valuing military brotherhood, honor and valor above all else.
- What, gentlemen? - Taras called out to the remaining kurens. - Is there still gunpowder in the flasks? Did the sabers fail? Is the Cossack force tired? Didn't the Cossacks bend? - Dad, he’ll still get enough gunpowder! Sabers are still good; the Cossack strength was not tired; The Cossacks haven’t given in yet!
Taras Bulba
♦ Taras Bulba did not spare his life for the sake of his comrades.
Ostap
His body breathed with strength, and his knightly qualities had already acquired the broad strength of a lion. “Oh, yes, this will be a good colonel in time!” - said old Taras, - by all means, there will be a good colonel, and even one that will put daddy in his belt!
- Father! where are you! Can you hear? - I hear! - rang out among the general silence, and the whole million people shuddered at the same time.
Ostap
Andriy
His younger brother, Andriy, had feelings that were somewhat more lively and somehow more developed. He studied more willingly and without the tension with which a difficult and strong character is usually accepted. He was more resourceful than his brother; more often he was the leader of a rather dangerous enterprise and sometimes, with the help of his inventive mind, he knew how to evade punishment, while his brother Ostap, putting aside all care, threw off the scroll and lay down on the floor, not at all thinking of asking for mercy. He was also seething with a thirst for achievement, but along with it his soul was accessible to other feelings.
Who said that my homeland is Ukraine? who gave it to me in my homeland? The Fatherland is what our soul seeks, what is dearer to it than anything else. My homeland is you! This is my homeland! And I will carry this fatherland in my heart...
Andriy
- Well, what are we going to do now? - Taras said, looking straight into his eyes. But Andriy didn’t know anything to say and stood with his eyes fixed on the ground. - What, son, did your Poles help you? Andriy was unresponsive. - So sell it? sell faith? sell yours? Stop, get off your horse! Obediently, like a child, he got off his horse and stopped, neither alive nor dead, in front of Taras. - Stop and don’t move! I gave birth to you, I will kill you! - said Taras and, stepping back, took the gun off his shoulder.

The story and its characters

I think that this story will interest any reader. From this book I learned a lot about the Cossacks. Historical events themselves arouse interest. As for the heroes, I like Taras Bulba the most, the “ideal Cossack”, but overly cruel. The author compares the image of Taras Bulba with the fate of Ukraine.

This article will examine one of Gogol's most famous stories. We will analyze it. "Taras Bulba" is a work familiar to everyone since school years. It is not surprising that it is still very popular - the story touches on many important issues that remain relevant at any time. Rereading the chapters of Taras Bulba, we discover something new for ourselves every time. We will talk about the main ideas of this work. Characteristics of the main characters are also included in our analysis.

"Taras Bulba": the history of the creation of the work

Nikolai Vasilyevich, having completed work on “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka,” began a cycle of stories called “Mirgorod,” consisting of two parts. "Taras Bulba" and "Old World Landowners" are works included in the first part of this book. Both parts were first published in early 1835.

Genre features

In terms of its genre, "Taras Bulba" is a historical story. It is notable for its versatility, for the fact that it presents many characters. Despite the large number of heroes, the center of the story is still the fate of Taras Bulba, a Cossack colonel, as well as his two sons. The characteristics of each of them are included in our analysis.

"Taras Bulba" is a story that is interesting not only from the point of view of the characters, but also from the point of view of the plot. Let us briefly outline what the work is about.

The plot of the work

The arrival of former students at their parents' house is the beginning of the story. Taras immediately checks the combat training of his sons. It is important for him that they are real warriors and good Cossacks. For a mother, the most important thing is that her children are happy and healthy. Immediately after arriving, Taras decides to go to Zaporozhye with his sons. He wants them to gain some sense here. In his opinion, the Zaporozhye Sich is the true school for the Cossack. While here, the sons of Taras Bulba are engaged in military affairs, but their life is mainly spent in feasts and revelry.

The climax of the story is the scene of the siege of the city of Dubno. It is in this episode that the value world of the main characters of the work is tested. Taras Bulba, Ostap and Andriy fight bravely. Both sons of the Cossack behave bravely. However, Ostap is cold-blooded, and his brother enjoys the music of bullets. In addition, Andriy agrees to help his beloved Polish woman, which is a betrayal. The siege of Dubno ends with the defeat of the Cossacks. Taras deals with his youngest son, who committed treason. How does Gogol end the story? Taras Bulba, the main character of the work, is deprived of the daring Cossacks. He dies. This is the denouement of the story.

Patriotic pathos of the work

Of course, the work “Taras Bulba” is marked with great patriotic pathos. This theme runs through the entire narrative. A positive healthy beginning, integrity and talent, a wide scope of nature - the author sees all this among the people, all this was manifested in his heroic past. "Taras Bulba" is a story in which Gogol tells us about how the Ukrainian people fought against the Patriotic pathos of the work that interests us is determined by the broad depiction of this struggle. The author showed the bonds of friendship that connect the Ukrainian and Russian peoples in their historical destiny. It is no coincidence that Gogol mentions the “Russian strength” of the Cossacks. For him, it means people from various Russian principalities, slaves who fled from their masters and united to fight for independence.

Image of Taras Bulba

Taras Bulba is the main character of the work. This is by no means a conventionally heroic image. This hero has specific historical features. Nikolai Vasilyevich truthfully portrays the image of a Cossack of those harsh years. Only in rare periods of calm can he return to peaceful life, to his family. The rest of the time, Taras Bulba is a warrior who devotes his life to serving his homeland.

This hero is not characterized by hesitation. Taras always sees a goal in front of him. He believes that his duty is impeccable service to his homeland. This is where the origins of his courage and fearlessness come from. Taras Bulba is characterized by “rough straightforwardness of character,” which is contrasted in the work with the effeminacy of the Polish gentry, as well as the Cossacks who adopted their habits.

The main feature in the image of Taras

The main feature in the image of Taras Bulba is selfless patriotism. All his physical and mental strength is supported by this feeling. After a long separation from his sons, in the first minutes of their meeting he greets them not with hugs, but with a test of their fighting qualities.

The harsh times in which Taras lived dictated their own rules. Men were expected to become fearless fighters. And Taras Bulba can’t wait to boast about his sons in the Sich. Therefore, he sends them to a military camp, without allowing them to enjoy at least a little time at home.

The last minutes of Taras's life

Describing Taras Bulba, Nikolai Vasilyevich notes that only in difficult times could such a selfless and stubborn warrior arise. The last moments of Taras Bulba’s life are full of true love for his people and heroism. He does not think that he will soon die a painful death, he does not feel pain in his burning legs. This Cossack strives to help out his comrades who are in trouble. Taras helps them escape because he hopes that they will continue the work for which he gave his life.

Sons of Taras Bulba

For Taras, love for the homeland and loyalty to it are much higher than personal affection and blood kinship. Because of this, the tragedy that affected his family becomes even worse. The colonel had two sons. The eldest of them was called Ostap, and the youngest was Andriy. Gogol endows his eldest son with the traits of a hero, like other Cossacks. But Andriy in the story appears as a subtle man who sees beauty in life and knows how to appreciate it. The youngest son of Taras was seduced by the Polish lady, as a result of which he went over to the side of the enemy. Thus, Andriy betrayed his father, his homeland, and his comrades. Bulba independently executes his son, who betrayed the people.

Image of Ostap

In Ostap, the author portrayed the successor to his father’s work. Taras is rightfully proud of this son of his. For him, like for many other Cossacks, the fatherland is the most precious thing in life. For her sake, the hero of the story "Taras Bulba" Ostap is ready to endure the most terrible torments and even accept death. Subjected to severe torture, he does not lose courage in the execution scene. He understands that he is not dying in vain.

Military work is the most important activity for Ostap. In spiritual terms, this hero is somewhat primitive, since he is not interested in anything other than military disciplines. However, Ostap's patriotism, his loyalty to his comrades and his oath make the reader admire him.

Characteristics of Andria

Andriy, who took the path of betrayal, did not become the defender of the Fatherland. Together with his enemies, he began to kill his former comrades and friends. The dreamy, sublime and romantic hero is alien to the reality that surrounds him, the rough morals and way of life, Andriy sees well-fed and carelessly sleeping Cossacks and people dying of hunger. And the picture of the world in his mind changes. The hero cannot understand his own experiences. For him, love becomes the highest value. It is for her sake that he decides to betray his comrades.

What is the author’s attitude towards this hero? He regrets the death of Andriy, who knew how to feel deeply and subtly, and also fight bravely. Gogol exclaims: “And the Cossack died...” Despite the fact that Nikolai Vasilyevich draws the heroes of the Sich with admiration, we do not feel a direct condemnation of Andriy. We can say that the author's position is ambiguous.

Ostap and Andriy - two ways

In the story "Taras Bulba" these heroes personify two possible paths that a person can take. The first path is immortality in the name of the happiness of one’s people, the second is inglorious death, betrayal and a defamed name, which even if descendants remember, it will be with shame and hatred.

Nature image

Of course, from the point of view of the characters, the story "Taras Bulba" is very interesting. The characters depicted in it were a success for the author. However, Gogol in his work tells not only about brave and strong warriors. The story presents detailed pictures of the lush nature of Little Russia. Such selfless and freedom-loving fighters grow in the endless expanses of the steppe. And they, having matured, protect this beautiful world.

This concludes our analysis. “Taras Bulba,” according to Belinsky, is an epic written with a broad and bold brush. A.P. Chekhov called Nikolai Vasilyevich “king of the steppe.” One cannot but agree with this.
