Composition and technical characteristics of bituminous varnish, properties and application

Protection of metal products against corrosion in climatic conditions of high humidity and aggressive environmental processes is one of the key issues in the production and operation of metal parts in heavy industry. Over the past decades, a traditional solution has been bitumen varnish and its use for short-term anti-corrosion protection of parts and assemblies during their operation, storage and transportation. However, due to the variety of recipes for the manufacture of bituminous paints and varnishes, over time, the scope of their use has expanded significantly up to the use of bitumen-based varnish in decorative work.

What is bituminous varnish, composition and classification

The main component of bituminous varnishes and paints is a solid substance - bitumen. Among its mechanical characteristics, one can single out the ability to soften and melt under the influence of temperature, in addition, they have the property of dissolving only under the influence of organic solvents. It can also contain corrosion inhibitors, antiseptics and other additives.

In the manufacture of varnishes, the following types of bitumen can be used:

  • Created by nature (asphalts and asphaltites, which differ in their qualities depending on the place of extraction).
  • Artificial (residual products of oil distillation, derivatives of cracking, oxidation).
  • Coal, peat and woody pitches.

According to the chemical composition, paintwork materials containing bituminous materials are divided into:

  • Oil-containing, which are subject to classification into oil-bitumen and oil-bitumen-resin (if there are glyphthal or rosin resin components in the formulation). By the number of oil components, greasy, medium and skinny varnishes are distinguished.
  • Oil-free; solutions of bitumen and organic solvent with the inclusion (absence) of rosin in the composition (bituminous and bitumen-resinous).
  • Coal - compounds of coal tar pitch and other bitumen in organic solvents.

Bituminous varnishes: application and properties

Oil-bituminous paintwork materials have high moisture resistance, weather resistance and electrical insulating properties. Varnishes without oil inclusions form a fusible water-resistant layer on the surface, however, at a low cost in production, they have a number of significant disadvantages - low lightfastness and heat resistance, low stability. The main color is black, shades are not subject to standardization.

Due to their properties, oil-bitumen coatings are used in the following cases:

  • As an adhesive in the manufacture of mica tape.
  • In electric motors for covering windings.
  • In electrical engineering for the protection of assemblies and parts.
  • In construction and repair work for protective coating metal pipesunderground, primed wooden products. For waterproofing various structures made of plastic, concrete, brick, wood (basements and others).
  • Protection of battery assemblies from the action of sulfuric acid.
  • As a coating for chemical equipment and metal structures.
  • For gluing roll materials in roofing works (popular brand BT-123).
  • For aging crafts in decoupage.

Kuzbasslak is the most popular type of oil-free bitumen-containing coatings. The use of additives and driers in the recipe is allowed. The thinner can be White Spirit, turpentine. The main direction of use is the preservation of metals in the interoperative period of time, anti-corrosion protection during storage of metal products. The term of use of the protective film is up to 6 months. Suitable for use on wood substrates and other materials exposed to atmospheric conditions. The appearance of the coating is black gloss / semi-gloss, the shade is not standardized. On the basis of BT-577, when adding a suspension of aluminum powder, BT-177 paint (aluminum paint) is obtained.

The main specifications according to GOST 5631-79:

  • The share of non-volatile substances is 39%.
  • Viscosity at 20C, sec - 18-35 (VZ-4).
  • Drying time - 24 hours at 20C, 20 minutes at 100-110C.
  • Consumption per 1m2 - 100-120g.

Bituminous varnish in decoupage for aging crafts

It is used to create an aging effect and expressive volumetric relief on the surface of decorative items. It is achieved by lightening convex shapes and darkening depressions and microcracks. In most cases it is used as a top coat.

The varnish is applied with a flat brush, after which it is rubbed with a sponge or a piece of cloth and the excess is removed until the layer dries, adjusting the degree of darkening of the coating. After drying, the shade adjustment is possible with a cloth soaked in white spirit.

Before using bitumen-containing paints and varnishes, the working fluid should be thoroughly mixed until homogeneous throughout the volume. With increased viscosity, it is necessary to bring the varnish to the desired condition using thinners - white spirit, turpentine or other compatible solvent (depending on the brand of coating).

The surface to be painted must be dry, without dirt and dust deposits, easily peeling traces of the previous coating. Metal parts must be cleaned of traces of corrosion, if possible, treated with a rust modifier. The varnish is applied with a roller, brush or spray gun. With multi-layer staining, the interoperative drying interval takes at least 6 hours.

It is not recommended to use bituminous varnish inside residential premises; it is advisable to carry out painting work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. It is fire hazardous, therefore it is strictly forbidden to work near open sources of fire and heating equipment with an open filament element. To avoid damage to the mucous membrane and skin, carry out the painting in protective clothing, using gloves and goggles.

For temporary protection of surfaces of metal structures, products in construction, mechanical engineering and other industries during their short storage and transportation (up to 6 months in a temperate climate for a single-layer coating), as well as for the manufacture of BT-177 aluminum paint.

BT-577 Is a varnish based on a mixture of petroleum bitumen with organic solvents (a mixture of white spirit, solvent in a ratio of 1: 2), synthetic additives, a drier. The paint and varnish material is used to create a protective coating on metal. Also, BT-577 bitumen varnish is used as a basis for the production of aluminum paint (silver) BT-177.

This paint and varnish material can be used in mechanical engineering, construction and other sectors of the national economy. Bituminous varnish BT-577 effectively protects metal from rusting, in other words, corrosion, during transportation and short-term storage. Perfect for temporary protection of products.

After applying bituminous varnish, a glossy, even film is formed, uniform without mechanical impurities, wrinkles, pockmarks and other defects.

The color of BT-577 bitumen varnish is black, the shade is not regulated by GOST.

The lacquer manufacturing technology includes four stages:

Preparation of the varnish base;

Preparation of the varnish itself;

Mixer typing;

Cleaning in a centrifuge, filtration and filling into containers.

The base for BT-577 bitumen varnish is prepared in a reactor equipped with a system for blowing the composition with air (bubbler) and a propeller stirrer. The installation, strictly observing the sequence and proportions, is loaded with petroleum bitumen, asphaltite, prepared flax oil (amount - about 5%). The mass is melted at a temperature of about 120 ° C, then heated to 280 ° C and held until a sample on the glass indicates the homogeneity of the alloy. Air blowing contributes to the oxidation of the mixture and its cooling to a temperature of 105 - 115 ° С. Next, the varnish is pumped into the mixer, where it is thoroughly mixed and, using a diluent, is brought to the required viscosity (according to VZ-4, not less than 18s).

To apply varnish BT-577, a brush, roller or paint sprayer is used. In an industrial environment, painting can be done by dipping in a bath with paint and varnish material. This is especially true for small-sized parts and metal structures. Before application, varnish BT-577 is diluted to the required consistency using white spirit or nefras. You can also use a solvent, turpentine, or a mixture of both.

When painting, the consumption of BT-577 varnish is 100-200 grams per square meter, while the recommended number of layers is 1-2. The drying time of a single-layer protective coating at room temperature (+20 degrees Celsius) is 24 hours. If you use the hot drying method, in which the temperature is at least 100 degrees, the drying time to the third degree of hardness is reduced to twenty minutes - half an hour.

Based on the technical characteristics of BT-577 bitumen varnish, one can judge the special properties of this paint and varnish material. The composition is applied to a metal surface without preliminary treatment with primer paintwork. The protective film adheres firmly to the metal due to the good adhesion of the material to the base. This paintwork material provides effective temporary protection against corrosion in temperate climates, both indoors and outdoors.

The BT-577 bitumen varnish contains about 39% of non-volatile components (their mass fraction). The protective film is characterized by a fairly good heat resistance (withstands up to 200 ° C), elasticity - no more than 1 mm. The paintwork is resistant to short-term exposure to solutions of mineral salts. At an ambient temperature of about 20 ° C protective layer withstands at least 48 hours of static exposure to water.

When working with BT-577 varnish, it is important to remember about safety precautions, since such a solution is fire hazardous and toxic. Painting should be carried out in a well-ventilated area or outdoors, excluding the presence of open fire or the possibility of its occurrence. In the event of a fire, extinguishing agents can be: foam, sand, carbon dioxide, felts or water in a finely atomized state.

To protect the skin, the dye should wear protective clothing and protective gloves. It will not be superfluous to use glasses, a respirator mask.

Manufacturers of 577 bitumen varnish guarantee its quality for six months from the date of production, provided it is stored correctly, that is, in a closed sealed container in a dark, cool place.

BT-577 bituminous varnish is manufactured in accordance with GOST 5631-79.

Solutions of film-forming agents based on petroleum bitumen containing 40-48% of asphaltenes, carbenes and carbides, 15-18% resins, 34-50% mineral oils or coal tar pitch; film-forming solvents in bitumen varnish (Kuzbasslak) are turpentine, white spirit, oil or coal solvent, xylene; synthetic additives that improve the gloss of surfaces and accelerate the drying of kuzbasslak.
