When laying a new parquet flooring or updating the appearance of parquet in old houses, the use of such a highly effective tool as alkyd-urethane parquet varnish will become indispensable. The specified varnish not only performs the functions of protecting wood flooring from unfavorable external influences and improving its appearance, but it can also be successfully used to give additional strength to stairs, doors, windows and natural wood furniture.

The main properties of alkyd-urethane varnish:

1. The composition of the varnish is completely ready for use.

2. The varnish strengthens the treated wood surfaces, increases their service life, and also emphasizes the natural beauty and structure of wood fibers.

3.Provides ease of application and obtaining a uniform, uniform coating.

4. The varnish coating of wooden surfaces, obtained with the help of alkyd-urethane varnish, is characterized by high resistance not only to mechanical stress, but also to contact with water and chemical agents.

5. Alkyd-urethane varnish dries quickly: it takes 12-24 hours for each layer to dry. Complete drying of the lacquer coating takes place within 1 week, and after 2 weeks, you can spread the carpet and arrange furniture.

Alkyd urethane varnish is a mixture of alkyd resins and urethane components, diluted with an organic solvent. This varnish is used for the treatment of any wooden surfaces, including parquet, furniture, stairs, yachts, etc. Alkyd-urethane compounds are used for varnishing, both fresh wood and that which has already been varnished.

Note! Mixtures of the alkyd-urethane group are not intended for surface treatment in saunas, baths and other rooms exposed to excessive moisture.

Advantages

Alkyd-urethane mixtures have a number of positive characteristics:

  1. Attractive appearance.
  2. Fast drying (average waiting time is shorter than in the case of alkyd varnishes, and subject to technological procedures does not exceed 6-12 hours).
  3. High wear resistance and increased hardness of the coating (for this indicator, the alkyd-urethane group is also preferable to alkyd compositions).
  4. The mixture is easy to apply and evenly distributed over the surface, after which the wood becomes matte or semi-matte.
  5. Resistant to moisture and impact household chemicals.
  6. Protecting the floor from dirt.
  7. Almost complete absence of smell (the mixture is made on the basis of weak aromatic solvents).
  8. High elasticity of the coating, due to which the material is not susceptible to cracking when the size of the wooden product changes.
  9. The end parts of the parquet do not stick together. Thus, material stress is avoided.
  10. No priming of the surface is required before applying the varnish to the previously varnished surface.
  11. The parquet treated with an alkyd-urethane mixture is not slippery when walking on it.
  12. Varnishes of this group allow to intensify the natural color of wood, making the surface pattern more accentuated.

Technical standards

Below are the main parameters to which varnishes of the alkyd-urethane group must correspond:

  1. The maximum possible VOC content is 500 grams per liter.
  2. According to ISO 2813, the gloss of the alkyd-urethane mixture shall be matt or semi-matte.
  3. The quality parameters of this group of varnishes are prescribed in the ISO 9001 standard.
  4. The maximum allowable wood moisture is 18%.
  5. The optimum temperature for applying the composition is from 10 to 25 degrees above zero, and the humidity can range from 40 to 75%.
  6. The recommended temperature of the varnish at the time of applying it to the surface is from 18 to 25 degrees Celsius.
  7. Consumption of paint and varnish material - 1 liter for 8-12 square meters of coverage.
  8. Drying time from dust is 2 hours. Final drying occurs in a day, provided that the humidity is approximately 50%, and the air temperature is around 23 degrees above zero.
  9. The guaranteed shelf life is 5 years.

Preparatory activities

Surface preparation is carried out taking into account the following rules:

  1. It is unacceptable to paint the surface in direct sunlight, as well as in drafts.
  2. Before processing, remove dirt, grease and oil stains from the surface.
  3. If the wood is hardwood, soak it with White Spirit solvent.
  4. We treat rough places with water from a spray bottle. When the surface is dry, sand it to remove the raised wood fibers.
  5. If the surface was previously varnished, we check the paint and varnish materials for compatibility. To do this, we do a test staining in a small area. Please note: the final color of the coating depends on both the type of wood and the number of layers of paint and varnish applied.
  6. The varnished surfaces do not need to be primed, but if the varnish is peeling it must be removed and then sanded twice. Please note: for the first time we sand the wood with obvious force using coarse sandpaper. Sand a second time more carefully, using fine-grained sandpaper.
  7. If the varnish will be applied to fresh wood, it should be primed with White Spirit. Recommended proportion: for five parts of solvent one part of paint and varnish composition.
  8. After sanding the surface, remove the dust with a vacuum cleaner. Moreover, dust should be removed not only from the floor, but also from all nearby areas: a heating battery, baseboards, window sills, etc. A situation should not be allowed when chips or dust fall on the floor that is not dry from the varnish.
  9. Wipe the wood with a clean, barely damp, lint-free cloth.

Note! Although urethane-alkyd varnishes are more commonly used on wood, they can also be used on concrete.

Application

Stir the varnish well before use. And we do it so as to avoid bubbling. If the varnish is not mixed, it will not be possible to achieve a uniform tone of the coating.

Apply the alkyd-urethane mixture in two or three layers, since this composition is very deeply absorbed into the wood structure. If the wood is not too porous, you can limit yourself to a couple of layers, but for highly porous rocks, you will need three layers. The varnish layers should be thin, so the surface will dry faster. We varnish the surface in the direction of the wood grain or from the side of the window. Before applying each subsequent layer, expect the surface to dry completely.

Advice! The surface will dry much faster if there is good air circulation in the room.

If it is necessary to tint wood, it is recommended to especially carefully read the instructions from the manufacturer. For example, when applying Aura Balance varnish, the color composition is applied first, and for the remaining layers, a colorless paint composition is used.

The varnish is applied to the surface with a brush, roller or special spatula. The bristles of the brush must be firmly attached to the instrument to avoid getting them on wet surfaces. It is recommended to use a varnish trowel when a light tone of the coating is required. The fact is that when working with a spatula, the paint and varnish material is absorbed into the wood less significantly than in the case of a roller or brush.

If the floor will be used under conditions of increased loads, it is recommended to give preference to parquet from hard varieties wood. The fact is that soft varieties (pine, spruce, etc.) will deform regardless of the strength characteristics of the varnish.

Advice! If wood is varnished in dry and hot climates, it is necessary to limit the excessive air circulation. This is necessary to prevent the floor from drying out too quickly, which can lead to cracking of the coating.

Painted surface care

Coatings for which alkyd-urethane varnishes were used, achieve maximum strength 3-4 weeks after applying the composition. Before that, they are vulnerable to external factors. Therefore, freshly lacquered surfaces should not be cleaned with household cleaning products. If during the first month there is a need to clean the coating, it is recommended to use a soft damp cloth for this.

Precautionary measures

Storage and transportation of alkyd-urethane compositions should be carried out at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees above zero. The varnish must be protected from direct sunlight.

During storage, transportation and use of varnish, precautions should be taken, since alkyd-urethane compositions contain butanone oxime and cobalt bis. In humans, these substances can lead to an allergic reaction, manifested in dryness and cracking of the skin.

Important! Alkyd-urethane mixtures cannot be disposed of in sewerage system... It is also unacceptable for varnish to enter an unprotected environment.

Alkyd-urethane varnish "yacht"

They are characterized by increased resistance to external factors. On the basis of alkyd and urethane, two types of paints and varnishes are produced - alkyd-urethane and urethane-alkyd. These mixtures differ in the concentration of the main substance: in alkyd-urethane there are more alkyds and, conversely, urethane predominates in urethane-alkyd varnishes.

This type of varnish provides a high quality, hard, low temperature and weather resistant coating. However, the main feature of alkyd-based paint and varnish mixtures is the highest drying rate of the varnished surface. Manufacturers achieve this characteristic by adding highly volatile solvents to the formulations. Such substances evaporate very quickly - much faster than ordinary white spirit. However, the use of rapidly evaporating solvents results in a very high toxicity of the varnish.

Urethane-alkyd paints and varnishes are specially designed for indoor use. Unlike alkyd-urethane varnishes, urethane-alkyd varnishes contain less organic solvents. Also important is the fact that urethane-based plasticizers are inhibitors that prevent the evaporation of chemicals. Thanks to the urethane component, the coating acquires elasticity and increased resistance to temperature extremes.

Urethane-alkyd varnishes are recommended, first of all, for application on so-called "warm floors". Most other varnishes will crack when heated regularly. And only wood, covered with a composition where urethane predominates, is guaranteed to retain its performance characteristics.

Alkyd-urethane varnish is one of the best solutions for varnishing a wooden surface, which has undeniable advantages. However, the alkyd-urethane coating, like any other, wears out over time. Therefore, in 7-10 years the coverage will need to be renewed. It is also necessary to remember about the toxicity of alkyd-urethane mixtures and take precautions in time when handling this paint and varnish material.

Urethane varnish, which is also called polyurethane, has unique qualities of economy and high reliability of the formed layer. It can be used to protect surfaces made of wood, metal and mineral materials from chemical and mechanical influences. Among the latter, one should highlight: brick, stone, concrete and concrete tiles.

The term "polyurethane" is more correct than "urethane varnish", because such mixtures are polymeric materials. Multifunctional surface protection is one of their main tasks.

Characteristics of the brand "Elakor-PU"

This composition is intended for wooden surfaces, including parquet. For 10 kg of the mixture, you will have to pay 260 rubles. Products can be transported and stored at temperatures from -40 to +25 ° C, which is very popular with consumers. This varnish is intended for application to wood and forms a chemical bond with its fibers, providing the most durable adhesion to the surface. As a result, the wood layer is significantly hardened. Among the main characteristics of the composition, one should single out a very fast ability to harden (after all, the next layer can sometimes be applied after 3 hours), chemical resistance and especially high mechanical wear resistance. This varnish is used as a varnish for wood and parquet in civil, public and administrative, as well as industrial premises. This can cause high pedestrian loads on the floor. The surface can even be exposed to chemical attack.

Additional properties

Urethane parquet varnishes of the type described above can be applied to surfaces that have been previously treated with anti-fungal compounds. Can be applied to fire-retardant impregnations. Due to the fact that the varnish has the qualities of wear resistance, the surface acquires characteristics that are less susceptibility to scratches and the accumulation of dirt, as well as microorganisms. Cleaning can be carried out with any detergent, if necessary, disinfecting and antibacterial drugs can be used. These varnishes have one drawback, which is that they give the surface a yellowish amber hue, naturally, the color of the parquet wood will also change.

Characteristics of varnish for concrete "Varnish-60"

You can buy a 10 kg package for 275 rubles. After hardening, this composition forms a hard surface, which is characterized by high protective qualities. The base acquires resistance to chemical and mechanical stress. Applications: warehouses, production halls and tanks, as well as technical pools. It undergoes constant contact with water, alkaline, acidic electrolytes and mineral oils. With its help, it is possible to seal and dust the concrete surface, giving it the quality of impact resistance.

Things to Remember

The surfaces for application can be concrete, mineral bases, aluminum and its alloys, as well as carbon and low-alloy steels. For a bucket (10 kg) you will have to pay 290 rubles. If you need to purchase food varnish in large quantities, you should pay attention to containers up to 200 kg.

Features of urethane yacht varnish

Urethane yacht varnish presented for sale in the form of urethane-alkyd and alkyd-urethane ship varieties, which dry in a short time and have less organic solvent in the composition. Excessive evaporation of harmful chemicals is reduced by the presence of plasticizers in the composition. The surface is highly flexible and resistant to sudden temperature changes. This is practical if the cottage has a floor heating system. Urethane varnish, the characteristics of which are important to know before purchasing, is an alkyd-urethane ship varnish, which can only be used for outdoor work, since it is toxic.

Characteristics of Eteral varnish

Urethane varnish "Eteral" is a solution of urethane pseudo-prepolymer, which cures upon contact with atmospheric moisture. The main areas of application are the possibility of applying to concrete, metal, floor surfaces, as well as wood. The main advantages are durability, comprehensive protection and economy. With proper preparation of the base and application according to technology, the varnish can be used for 30 years. At the same time, it will retain its technical and operational qualities. This urethane compound performs several functions at once, protecting the surface from moisture, mechanical damage and chemicals.

The surface can be used at temperatures from -60 to +90 ° C, which indicates unpretentiousness to conditions. This composition, after curing, can protect surfaces in production halls, as well as outdoors in the northern regions. The base gets resistance to abrasion and allows intense loads.

Features of the use of varnish "Eteral"

Eteral can be applied with a spray gun, roller or brush. In this case, the temperature should be equal to from -20 to +40 ° С, while the air humidity can be equal to a figure in the range from 30 to 98%. When applied in one coat on square meter it will take about 50 g of the composition. The number of layers can be up to four.

After opening the container, the varnish can be used within 24 hours, it is these storage conditions that should be adhered to. If it has not been used to the end, then the surface should be poured with a moisture diluent or toluene, the layer height of which can reach 2 cm. After that, the lid is tightly closed and the varnish is left in this state until the next use is necessary.

There are a huge number of different kinds of paintwork materials on sale today. One of the most popular representatives of this variety is alkyd-urethane varnish. This tool is distinguished by simply excellent performance characteristics and, moreover, has a very wide range of applications.

general description

Originally builders when performing renovation works used As a base in their manufacture, special resins were used, extracted from linseed and wood oils. Fatty acids were also included in these products. Later, various polymer additives were also added to alkyd varnishes, which significantly improve their performance characteristics. Today, when performing repair work, only such high-quality products are mainly used. Many companies, both domestic and foreign, produce alkyd-urethane varnishes.

Benefits of the tool

The advantages of alkyd-urethane varnishes include:

  • resistance to temperature extremes;
  • ease of use;
  • moisture resistance;
  • lack of adhesive properties;
  • aesthetic appearance of the formed film;
  • resistance to mold and mildew.

Among other things, paintwork materials of this modified group are distinguished by high abrasion resistance and a very long service life.

Cons of varnish

Of course, alkyd-urethane varnish has some disadvantages. These include, first of all:

  • unpleasant odor;
  • flammability.

The disadvantages of old alkyd varnishes, among other things, include long drying. It takes about 24 hours to wait for the film to completely harden when using such a tool. Alkyd-urethane varnishes are devoid of this minus. The toluene diisocyanate included in their composition gives the resin additional molecular weight. Therefore, the solvent from such funds evaporates just instantly, and therefore, they dry much faster (6-16 hours). But urethane varnishes are also more expensive.

Varieties by area of \u200b\u200buse

Most often, this tool is used to paint wooden surfaces. There are only two main varieties of alkyd-urethane varnish:

  • Yacht. They paint vessels above the waterline level.
  • Parquet. It is mainly used for painting wooden floors.

Of course, both of these varieties can be used for the treatment of any other wooden surfaces. Alkyd-urethane yacht varnish is more suitable for outdoor use. Very often, for example, it is used to process wooden arbors, verandas, and other small architectural forms. most often used indoors. In addition to floors, it is well suited for painting furniture, frames, stair railings, doors, etc.

In terms of composition, such a varnish can be one- or two-component. The second type is more expensive, but it also differs in greater wear resistance. Also, funds in this group are classified into matte, semi-gloss and glossy. The first group of varnishes is used mainly on surfaces that are highly contaminated during operation. The fact is that it is very easy to clean. Alkyd urethane glossy varnish reflects a lot of light. Therefore, it is advisable to use it in dark rooms or on small, elegant decor items.

Where else can the remedy be used

In addition to wood surfaces, alkyd urethane varnishes can be used to paint metal and stone. Also, sometimes they are used for However, before using this type of paintwork materials for painting surfaces of this type, you should read the operating instructions. Some brands of alkyd-urethane varnishes are intended for painting exclusively wood.

Manufacturers

The most popular among domestic owners of houses and apartments are alkyd-urethane products of such brands as:

  • Parade;
  • White house;
  • Bor.

Parade alkyd-urethane varnish is characterized by increased elasticity. The film formed by it does not crack over time and does not wear out long time... In addition, Parade products perfectly enhance the natural structure of the wood. This manufacturer produces alkyd-urethane varnishes intended for use both outdoors and indoors.

The main advantages of White house products are low cost and low odor. Like Parade, the paints from this manufacturer are highly wear-resistant, dry quickly and retain the natural color of the wood. White house alkyd-urethane varnish can be used for painting any wooden surfaces outdoors or indoors.

Domestic means "Bor" also have good performance characteristics. They dry out in just 4 hours. The film formed by them is resistant to the effects of any household cleaning agents.

Processing technique

Alkyd-urethane is applied in the same way as parquet, using the following technology:

  • The surface is thoroughly cleaned from dust and dirt. If necessary, the old coating is removed from it.
  • The wood is sanded and leveled. Before painting the metal, you need to remove the scale and rust from it.
  • Alkyd-urethane varnish is applied to the surface with a roller, brush or spray gun.
  • After the product has completely dried, the surface is covered with its second layer (perpendicular to the first).

It is allowed to use alkyd-urethane varnish at temperatures from +5 gr. Wear gloves and a respirator before starting work. If varnish gets on the skin during staining, it must be removed immediately warm water with soap. Splashes appearing on surrounding objects can be easily removed with white spirit.

Parquet alkyd-urethane varnish can be used for 7-10 years with strict adherence to the technology of its application. The same goes for the yacht version of this product. For comparison: the film formed by conventional varnishes intended for the treatment of wooden surfaces has to be renewed every 2-3 years.

What can be diluted

With prolonged storage, alkyd-urethane varnishes can change their consistency to a thicker one due to drying. In this case, the product should be diluted with a solvent before use. Manufacturers advise using a special SENTETIK TINER compound for this purpose. But it is allowed to dilute alkyd-urethane varnishes and white spirit (imported).

It is highly discouraged to apply the last coat of finish with a diluted product. Therefore, it is still advisable to use such a varnish immediately after purchase, without allowing it to dry out.

Since alkyd-urethane varnish is quite expensive, some owners of apartments and houses advise to prime new wooden surfaces before using it. This allows you to significantly reduce the consumption of funds. In this case, you can use the varnish itself as a primer, diluted with water in a 4x1 ratio.

Alkyd-urethane varnish: consumer reviews

In terms of quality, this modern product with polymer additives is significantly superior to many others. And therefore, reviews about him are mostly only good. The advantages of such varnishes, among other things, include ease of use and a long service life. Many apartment and house owners also note the fact that when using this type of paintwork, mold or mosses never appear on the tree. Also, these varnishes are praised for the fact that after their application, the surfaces acquire a very presentable beautiful appearance.

How much do varnishes cost

Since the funds of this group are of good quality, the price for them is usually quite high. So, Parade varnishes cost about 1300 rubles for 2.5 liters. For a White House bank of the same volume, you will have to pay about 750-800 rubles. Alkyd-urethane varnish "Bor" costs about 900-1000 rubles. for 2.5 liters.
