Needless to say, losing a key to a house, car, etc. is commonplace? Surely each of us has found ourselves in such an annoying situation, and it is good if the duplicate is prudently kept by relatives, friends or neighbor Aunt Dusya. Otherwise, you will have to call a locksmith to open the lock, proving your right to what is behind the door, and this promises unexpected waste of money and time.
Knowing this, the American company KeyMe offered careless people an alternative solution to the problem - instant 3D printing of a key from a pre-taken photograph. The distracted citizens finally breathed a sigh of relief, mentally praising the inventors of the three-dimensional printer.
How it works
In order to use the KeyMe service, you don’t need to do anything special or burdensome - you just need to have pre-taken photographs of important keys from two angles, saved in the phone’s memory, on the company’s cloud server or another location. In the case of storage on a server, you must create a personal account in the KeyMe service, linking it to a bank card and place of residence. Photos must be high-quality, clear and taken on a white background.
Then everything happens extremely simply and quickly: if it is necessary to make a duplicate key, the KeyMe client needs to find the nearest service device, identify his identity by scanning fingerprints and submit a request to make a 3D copy using a photo stored in the database.
The cost of a duplicate made in the KeyMe touch machine using a saved photo is quite adequate by local standards, and starts from $20. A car ignition key costs more - ranging from $20 to $65, depending on the “cunning” of the product. The people are happy, because it costs about the same in the USA to make a key in a regular workshop. Moreover, if 3D printing of a duplicate is carried out not from a digital photograph, but from the original, then the cost of the service ranges from $3 to $6. In this case, a photo of the key is not required, because the machine has a special connector where you need to insert source. In addition, the service allows you to print non-standard “decorative” keys in a similar way - the price is $6. We don’t know how much an American “burglar locksmith” charges for work, but it’s clearly more than $20.
And the site reminds us that even though we are not in America, we can also save money using a printer. We are talking about consumables for printing devices that can be reused. Offhand: refilling an HP CF218A cartridge costs 370 rubles, while a new original costs 4,000 rubles.
The developers of the service, which is currently positioned more as a startup, promise that making one copy of the key will take no more than 30 seconds.
And anyone can order a remote printing of a duplicate - then the courier will deliver the finished copy to a specified point in New York in approximately an hour.
To date, about several dozen “trial” KeyMe machines have already been installed in the United States, and in the near future the creators of the service plan to significantly increase their number. And the company’s global plans include expanding its business to the international level; fortunately, current demand allows us to make such ambitious plans. After all, since the installation of the first KeyMe network device, users have already ordered the production of several hundred thousand duplicate keys!
What about security?
If you have any doubts about the security of providing a photo of your keys (which, as you remember, are tied to your home address) at the disposal of the company, then its representatives say that there is no reason to worry. The level of security of the service is high, and is in no way inferior to the procedures associated with bank cards. At least so far there have been no complaints from numerous users.

Project head Stefan Savage urges: take care of your keys!
“The software we've developed,” says Sneakey project manager Stefan Savage, “is meant to show people that keys and locks are not reliable security at all. Perhaps, until some time, they could be considered sufficient, but with the use of modern technology, you can easily make duplicate keys simply from a photograph of them taken from a sufficient distance.”
The notches and protrusions on the keys, in fact, represent a unique code, knowing which you can also find out how the corresponding lock opens (otherwise the key simply will not fit). And in order to read this code, it is not necessary to pick up the key in the old fashioned way. Based on this logical assumption, Stefan Savage's group began work on the Sneakey project.
To demonstrate what they had achieved, the engineers took a picture of the keys of a regular lock using a camera built into a mobile phone. The photograph was loaded into a computer and analyzed by specially created software, which identified a “key code” sufficient to reproduce its duplicate. In another demonstration, they used a photo taken with a professional camera from a distance of about 60 m - the keys, as usual, were simply lying on a table in a cafe in front of a visitor who was enjoying a cup of coffee. And this was also enough to get duplicates.
The most popular keys in the United States have a set of 5-6 cuts of unequal length and depth, located at unequal distances from each other. So all the software needs to do is, given that the photo can be taken at an angle, determine the required dimensions. Apparently, the capabilities of this software can be expanded by adding the ability to analyze other types of keys.
The program is simple in operation: the operator selects several control points, on the basis of which the computer determines the angle at which the key is located, normalizes it in space and, after looking pixel by pixel, determines all the necessary dimensions. Of course, the developers do not intend to open the program code to the public, but the principle is simple and clear - apparently, we should soon expect that attackers will take it into service.
“The idea itself is unlikely to surprise professionals who design locks or make duplicate keys,” adds Savage. “There are masters who are able to make a copy just by looking at a key or a high-quality photograph of it. And the low cost and capabilities of modern digital photography, coupled with software, have simply automated this process.”
At the same time, according to Savage, the general public does not understand the danger posed by accessible snapshots of their keys: “Go to any online photo-sharing resource, such as Flickr, and you can easily find a lot of snapshots of keys that people with artistic or For some other purpose they simply post it on the Internet. Everyone knows about credit card numbers and no one thinks of uploading them to the website. The same must be remembered about the keys.”
