Kusudama- a type of traditional Japanese handicraft. The product is a paper ball or spherical polyhedron assembled (sewn or glued) from separate identical modules, usually floral or geometric. The process of making these models is similar to origami, but due to the subsequent stitching or gluing, it is not considered as such.
The art of kusudama comes from an ancient Japanese tradition where kusudama was used for incense and a mixture of dried petals; perhaps these were the first real bouquets of flowers or herbs. I really like lilies, so I’ve been wanting to make a floral one for a long time. kusudama based on origami " lily", or "iris". Let's try it together, as a gift to ourselves, our loved ones, March 8 🙂
How to make kusudama "Lily"
We will need paper - special for origami or any double-sided paper. Colored blocks for notes are well suited for this purpose, however, all the flowers in the module will be the same size. I used pastel colored printer paper. To reduce the consumption of precious paper, I took white 9x9 cm notepapers for the inner flower, pink paper for the middle flower, cutting it so that 6 squares fit on an A4 sheet (for me it’s 9.9x9.9 cm), well, the outer ones - four squares per sheet (the entire width of the sheet, i.e. 10.5x10.5 cm):
The flowers in the module differ slightly. Therefore, we build them according to the same scheme, making changes only at the end. To create a dense ball, I needed 14 modules, i.e. 14 flowers per size/color:

Having made the required number of flowers, we connect them into modules:
We take threads - I have white floss - and beads and secure each module by stitching it: the bead remains inside, the thread comes out through the base of the flower.
I left two long threads for the lower pendant and one for the upper loop, threading it through the core of the flower, but outward. We connect the modules first in groups of three or four, then in groups of 6-7, and finally, we assemble them into a ball:

So, how to make kusudama lily - master class.
It is necessary to prepare a square sheet of appropriate size and color. To begin with, you should mark the fold lines, for which the sheet is bent along two diagonals, horizontal and vertical. After this, you should fold the so-called basic figure, which is called “double square” in kusudama. Next, the corner of the left side should be bent towards the vertical axis of the module.
Next, you should straighten the resulting folding of the module, for which one of the parts of the part rises up and moves in different directions. Then it should be flattened. Similar actions should be performed with other corners of the module. The corners of the flattened part of the module should be bent towards the vertical.
Now we unbend the bent corners. After that, the central part of the module should be bent upward, and the sides towards the center. As a result, we get a triangle that should be bent down.
At the top of the module, the side parts should also be folded towards the center. Flipping through the module, we repeat these steps on all sides.
Using a pencil we will make the petals more real. The result was a beautiful lily bud.

Spring has come, which means that the theme of flowers is more relevant than ever! In search of new solutions, the idea arose to make a ball of small paper lilies for decorating a kindergarten. We will make such balls from modular origami structures - we will make kusudama. This ball consists of many flowers lilies, fastened together using PVA or hot melt adhesive pistol:
So, to work we will be needed:
1. office multi-colored paper
2. pencil
3. ruler
4. scissors
5. PVA glue or hot glue gun
Since the ball consists of individual flowers, let's start creating one such flower.
It also consists of three modules fastened together. First you need to choose the color of the future flower; it can be anything. I make yellow flowers with green sepals. We take the prepared paper and cut out three square: 14 cm (green, 13 cm (yellow, 12 cm (yellow).
Below is the technology for folding one module, it is the same for our three blanks:
We fold the remaining two blanks in the same way, we get three modules lilies:
Glue the larger yellow module into the green one, and then the smaller yellow module into the yellow one and you get a flower lilies. All that remains is to create 15 more of these flowers and glue them together. The ball is ready!

- The first thing you need to do is take sheets of colored paper and cut them into squares of the same size. Take one piece of paper and bend it diagonally to form an isosceles triangle. Fix the fold line well. Unfold the triangle and fold the sheet in half again along the second diagonal, securing the fold. Unfold the sheet again. After that, turn it over to the reverse side.
- Next, fold the piece of paper in half (make each fold clear!), unfold it, and fold it in half again. Lift the piece and fold it to form a square. The resulting double square, on the front side of which a clear diagonal fold line is visible, is the basic element in the technique of creating a kusudama ball from lilies.
- From the side of the closed corner of the square, bend two opposite corners towards the middle of the element. Then turn the piece over and do the same with the other two corners of the square.
- Now you need to hide all the resulting corners inside the part. To do this, they should first be bent and then folded inward. Hold them with your fingers.
- The resulting figure resembles a flower with four pointed petals, each of which is bent in half. Squeeze the petals in pairs so that the figure takes the shape of a diamond. Then bend the corners on each side of the part towards the middle.
- Now unfold these corners, bend the resulting pocket, fold its corners inside the part.
- Place the corners of the pocket under it and press the resulting diamond with a cut in the middle to the large diamond. Bend the top corner of the small diamond.
- Do a similar manipulation on each of the three remaining sides of the part to get four “pages”. One of them should be turned over, and the closed side should be folded towards the middle.
- Similarly, bend the corners on the remaining three sides of the part. After this, you should open the petals of the resulting paper flower.
- Lily is almost ready. All you have to do is give the petals a natural look by carefully curling their ends with a pencil. The remaining modules are made in a similar way. If you want to make a multi-colored kusudama ball, use a different color of paper.
When all the lily modules are ready, all that remains is to fasten them at the bases of the flowers to form a three-dimensional ball. Glue the modules together in pairs to make your work easier. Attach a decorative cord to the finished craft so that the ball can be hung.
