Pipeline connecting fittings form several groups of parts for installing parts of a pipeline or connecting containers, units and other types of equipment to it by tightening with bolts or studs. This type of product includes collar flanges, the design of which is somewhat different from similar products. They have a conical protrusion along the diameter of the pipe and are welded end-to-end with this protrusion to the pipe.

How collar flanges and fittings are made
Butt-welded steel flanges are identical in manufacturing method to the manufacturing methods of shut-off pipe fittings of similar types. They are made from rolled metal products or blanks obtained by hot forging/stamping, followed by mechanical processing. They can be produced using the following method:- electroslag (TSESHL) centrifugal casting;
- forging parts;
- hot stamping;
- bending of steel strip;
- gas cutting;
The company uses in its work all methods of manufacturing steel collar flanges with consistently high requirements for the quality of its products. The most convenient and, of course, profitable area is cooperation on an ongoing basis. By becoming a regular customer of the company, you will immediately feel all the benefits of your position, first of all, this concerns participation in promotions and other events related to reducing the cost of products. Plus - excellent quality and timely deliveries.
Features of shut-off valves
Since the role of shut-off valves, in particular steel collar flanges, in the operation of pipelines and equipment is enormous, the requirements placed on them are very high. The reliability of the engineering system directly depends on the quality of the flange connections of the pipeline parts. Modern technologies make it possible to produce shut-off valves of very high quality.
Constant monitoring of product quality standards, product resistance to corrosion, and resistance to aggressive environments is an incomplete list of requirements to which collar flanges are subject. To withstand aggressive environments, preference is given to stainless steel products. Collar flanges can be used either as independent fasteners or in combination with rings, gaskets, washers and other sealing elements.
Shut-off valves, which include collar flanges, are the key to the tightness of the pipeline, therefore the requirements are comparable to the operating conditions.

They are used to connect pipeline fittings (gate valves, gate valves) to pipelines and pipelines to equipment (pumps, tanks, heat exchangers), as well as to connect individual sections of pipelines to each other |
Steel butt weld flange (Collar flange) - a connecting part of pipelines, fittings, shafts, vessels, tanks, instruments, etc., consisting of a disk with holes for bolts (or studs) and a characteristic axially symmetrical protrusion in the shape of a truncated cone (“collar” or “neck” , neck, hub) for butt welding. Collar flange, along with the flat flange, is one of the frequently used connecting elements of pipelines. In foreign industrial terminology, collar flanges have the name Weld Neck Flange, or WN Flange.
The collar flange is used for hermetically sealing connection of individual parts of high pressure pipelines or for connecting process pipelines to tanks, vessels or apparatus. Application of collar flanges allows you to break the connection without cutting a pipe (often pipes with a fairly thick wall) to dismantle or modernize part of the pipeline; in this sense, the flange connection is “reusable”. The collar (neck) transfers forces to the pipe, reducing stress concentration at the base of the collar flange. The gradual transition of thickness from the base of the collar to the thickness of the pipe wall in the weld ensures the reliability of the collar flange. The flange diameter matches the pipe diameter, reducing turbulence and erosion of the flange joint. Used collar flange on pipelines where the nominal pressure is 0.1 - 20.0 MPa (1 - 200 kgf/cm²), and the temperature of the working environment ranges from -253°C to +600°C.
During installation collar flange does not fit onto the pipe like a flat flange, but is butt welded to it with one weld.
Collar flanges GOST 12821-80
Production of collar flanges is regulated by the domestic regulatory and technical document GOST 12821-80 "Steel butt-welded flanges on Ru from 0.1 to 20.0 MPa (from 1 to 200 kgf/cm²). Design and dimensions." The wording in English is " Steel butt-welded flanges for Pnom from 0.1 to 20.0 MPa (from 1 to 200 kgf/cm²). Design and dimensions". This document, standardizing collar flanges, was introduced to replace GOST 12829-67, GOST 12833-67 and GOST 12835-67.
According to GOST 12815-80, there are 9 different designs collar flanges: 1) collar flanges with a connecting projection; 2) collar flanges with a projection; 3) collar flanges with a cavity; 4) collar flanges with a spike; 5) collar flanges with a groove; 6) collar flanges with a recess for a lens seal; 7) collar flanges for an oval-section sealing gasket; 8) collar flanges with a spike for a fluoroplastic gasket; 9) collar flanges with a groove for a fluoroplastic gasket.
GOST 12821-80 establishes an example of a designation when ordering round steel butt weld flange Dy 50 mm at RU 1.0 MPa (10 kgf/cm²) from steel 25, version 1 (with a connecting projection):
Flange 1-50-10 St 25 GOST 12821-80,
Where:
1 - design of the collar flange;
50 - nominal bore, mm - (D y, DN);
10 - conditional pressure, kgf/cm² - (P y, РN);
St 25 is the steel grade from which the collar flange is made.
The appendix to GOST 12821-80 contains a table of compliance with OKP codes (All-Russian Product Classifier). For example, a collar flange with the designation 1-100-2.5 has OKP code 37 9941 4290 00, and stainless collar flange of the same designation - code 37 9941-5233 05.
We produce collar flanges nominal diameters 15, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 65, 80, 100, 125, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 500, 600,700, 800, 900, 1000, 1200, 1400, 16 00, 1800 mm and above and nominal pressures: 6, 10, 16, 25, 40, 63, 100, 160, 200 kgf/cm². Collar flange ASME/ANSI
According to ASME/ANSI (ASME - American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American National Standards Institute), collar flanges are called Welding Neck and are manufactured in accordance with ASME/ANSI B16.5 - 1996 - "Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings" and ASME/ANSI B16.47 "Large Diameter Steel Flange". ASME/ANSI B16.5 standardizes the production of flanges (including collar flanges) with a nominal diameter from 1/2 to 24 inches; collar flanges of large diameters (26 - 60 inches) are manufactured in accordance with the requirements of ASME/ANSI B16.47. This standard describes temperature and pressure modes, materials, dimensions, tolerances, markings, etc.
The figure on the right shows the following symbols:
A - neck diameter weld neck, or hub diameter at bevel;
X - collar diameter at the base (hub diameter);
Y 1 - collar length (weld neck length through hub);
C - thickness (thickness);
R - diameter of the connecting protrusion (raised face diameter);
O - outside diameter;
B 1 - internal diameter of the pipe (weld neck bore);
In accordance with ASME/ANSI B16.5, flanges are divided into classes (Class, permissible nominal pressure in pounds per square inch): 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500. To convert from units " class" in kgf/cm², it is necessary to divide the "class" value by 6. ANSI/ASME B16.47 includes classes 75, 150, 300, 400, 600, 900.
Non-standard collar flanges according to drawing
Non-standard collar flanges, manufactured according to customer drawings, are necessary if it is necessary to connect two pipelines built according to different standards, or parts of pipelines of different standards.
The use of various steels for the manufacture of collar flanges
The collar flange is made by processing a cast ring blank from the following steels: 3, 20, 20FA (structural high-quality carbon), 09G2S (structural low-alloy for welded structures) - collar flanges for cryogenic temperature conditions, 13HFA; 15Х5М (heat-resistant collar flanges); stainless steel collar flanges made of corrosion-resistant steels 20Х13, 14Х17Н2, 08Х18Н10Т, 12Х18Н10Т, 06ХН28МДТ, 10Х17Н13М2Т, 10Х17Н13М3Т, 10Х11Н23Т3МР.
Flanges in accordance with GOST 12821-80 are a steel part with which the parts of a pipeline and pipeline fittings are installed and connected to each other. The connection (pipe and flange) is made by butt welding the flange to the pipe.
Scheme for connecting the collar flange to the pipe
The GOST 12821-80 flange is butt welded to the pipe, unlike a flat one, and is welded along the contour with a continuous weld.
Selection of collar flanges
The choice of GOST 12821-80 flanges depends on the necessary parameters for connecting it to the mating element. The diameter of the flange Du (mm), the required operating pressure Ru (kgf/cm2), the design of the sealing surface, the steel grade, and the production method are taken into account.
The geometric characteristics and installation dimensions of collar flanges during their design and production are reflected in GOST 12821-80, the size range of the sealing surface is selected according to GOST 12815-80, collar flanges, like flat ones, can have 9 options for the design of the pressure surface.
Production of flanges according to GOST 12821-80
Collar flanges can be made from cast or forged blanks (forgings).
Our company produces and supplies flanges from forged or stamped blanks, the so-called forgings in accordance with GOST 8479-70; in the production of stainless steel collar flanges, forgings in accordance with GOST 25054-81 are used as a blank. Forged flanges have improved properties compared to castings and their scope of application is wider than cast products. The heat treatment of the flanges we supply meets the necessary norms and standards.
Material and technical parameters of flanges when choosing GOST 12821-80
When choosing flanges, you need to know the diameter of the flange DN, the pressure PN, the grade of steel from which the flange is made and the design of the flange.
Sometimes situations arise when a purchasing manager needs to select flanges for certain fittings and the flange parameters are missing. In these cases, we recommend contacting the engineering specialists of our company, who will help you select the necessary sets of flanges and accompanying materials, in accordance with the products where collar flanges serve as counter elements.
Material of supplied flanges GOST 12821-80: st.20, 09G2S, 13HFA, 12Х18Н10Т, 10Х17Н13М2Т.
Diameters from DN50 to DN800, pressure from PN50 to PN200. If the required flange design is not available, our company will provide the service of regrinding into the required one from existing stock.
Flange markings
After production, our flanges are marked in the location specified in the manufacturing process.
Flange marking can be done using the knurling or impact method.
The flange marking contains a description of the flange, steel grade, and metal melt number. Marking of additional inscriptions can be agreed upon individually when placing an order.
Testing and methods of inspection of flanges according to GOST 12821-80
Product control is carried out by the technical quality control department of our enterprise. Control begins with incoming inspection of the metal from which the products are made. After manufacturing the workpiece (forging) and carrying out heat treatment, the chemical composition of the metal is checked again and tested to identify mechanical properties. At the customer's request, we carry out additional ultrasonic testing with the preparation of a test report.
After passing all tests, the flanges are packed in a standard manner on a pallet, having previously been treated with graphite lubricant to prevent corrosion and shipped to the buyer or to a storage location.
Before shipping products to the buyer from the warehouse, visual inspection of the integrity of the packaging is carried out.
All of the above data are entered into the product passport. When purchasing our products, we issue a passport for the part, a quality certificate, additional test reports, and if necessary and with prior approval, we can issue a measurement card or drawings for the product.

In the catalog, collar flanges GOST 12821-80 are represented by butt-welded parts:
- made of steel 20;
- made of steel 09G2S;
- stainless;
- galvanized.
The size range of connecting fittings corresponds to the size range of standard seamless steel pipes.
The price of a collar flange is higher than that of a flat flange due to higher metal consumption and manufacturing complexity. In addition, the oversized product increases the volume of the pipeline into which it is built. Despite this, parts of this design are the most in demand, since the economic benefits of their use are obvious.
Features of collar flanges
Unlike flat ones, collar flanges are made with a so-called “collar” (skirt ring). A symmetrical protrusion in the form of a truncated cone with a groove, complementing the design, creates conditions for precise joining with the pipe, allowing the part to be reused without the need to cut the pipe to which it is connected.
The collar, 1 to 10 cm long, can be positioned perpendicular or oblique to the base. For small-sized pipes, flanges with narrowed collars are recommended; such modifications help level out pressure losses. A truncated cone reduces stress on the base because it transfers forces to the pipe, thereby creating an operational balance of the unit.
A collar-type flange is not pushed onto the pipe like a flat one, but is butt welded to the end of the pipe to form one weld. The collar is easily fused to the pipe; installation requires less skill than welding flat flanges.
The base of the product has mounting holes for fasteners (threaded rods or bolts) for connection to a mating flange.
Steel collar flanges GOST 12821-80 are used to assemble pipeline systems with nominal pressure from 0.1 to 20.0 MPa, transporting liquid and gaseous working media with temperatures from –253 to +600 degrees Celsius. Connecting fittings are necessary to create sealed circuits and are used to connect pipes to each other, as well as when connecting them to pumping units, apparatus, vessels, tanks and other technological equipment.
