Oven door seal. Door seal

To seal doorways and technological hatches of the boiler, it is necessary to use special sealing elements that can withstand high temperatures for a long time without losing elasticity.

Door seal must have thermal insulation properties. For this purpose they often use:

  • ceramic cord
  • basalt cord
  • asbestos cord

Door seal prevents flammable gases from the boiler from entering the room. The boiler operates in the correct mode when it has a strictly dosed local supply of oxygen through technological openings, and not through leaking doors. According to safety requirements for the operation of solid fuel boilers, the doors must fit tightly to the boiler body. Door seal must be elastic and follow the shape of the opening, and have high heat resistance.

Ceramic sealing cord

In BRIC boilers as door seal used ceramic cord.

Core ceramic cord: kaolin wool (mullite-silica fiber) - produced by melting pure oxides of aluminum and silicon, followed by blowing to the required density of grams per cubic centimeter.

Braid ceramic cord: glass roving (a braided strand of continuous fiberglass) that creates a dense sheath of heat-resistant cord.

Mullite-silica fiber from which it is made ceramic cord - door seal- has the following properties:

  • high temperature resistance
  • low heat capacity
  • low thermal conductivity
  • elasticity, tight fit to structures
  • refers to fireproof materials

Door seal in boilers, BRIC is a soft cord with a dense braid. A flexible and durable cord with thermal insulation properties follows the contour of the doorway and fits tightly to the surface.

The ceramic cord has the following characteristics:

  • operation at high temperatures is allowed (up to +1250℃)
  • low thermal conductivity
  • does not absorb moisture, does not rot, is not subject to chemical decomposition
  • The range of manufactured shapes (round, oval, square, rectangular cross-section) allows you to select a seal for the door of exactly the geometry required for more complete sealing.

Asbestos cord

Asbestos cord acts as a heat-insulating, heat-resistant, sealing material. Withstands high temperatures and insulates surfaces from thermal effects up to 400℃. Asbestos is a fine-fiber mineral from the class of silicates with a fibrous structure (resembles wool or cotton in appearance).

Asbestos cord produce three brands:

  1. SHAON (general purpose asbestos cord).
  2. SHAP (down asbestos cord)
  3. SHAU (asbestos sealing cord)

Composition: chrysotile asbestos fibers, has a complex chemical formula, structurally belongs to layered silicates.

Scope of application: sealing and thermal insulation of connections in various thermal units. Asbestos cord can be used in different environments: gas, steam, water.

Asbestos cord not used as a door seal in a BRIC boiler. Asbestos dust is a carcinogen and, when inhaled, has a negative impact on human health. The use of this material is not recommended in the European Union. In BRIC boilers, thermal insulation is used as a door seal. sealing ceramic cord free of asbestos and withstands much higher temperatures.

Replacing the cord

Ceramic sealing cord is a consumable item. Replacement of the cord is required in case of physical wear or loss of elasticity.

Replacing the cord does not present any difficulties. The old one should be removed from the groove. ceramic cord and place a new one in its place around the perimeter of the door. Next, with a little effort, close the door several times to install the cord more tightly in the niche of the door plate.

Purpose

The main purpose of fire-resistant sealing materials is to reliably insulate all parts of the furnace from air penetration and smoke escape into the room. But these materials are also used to seal flasks during metal casting, as well as in the construction, engineering, and glass industries. Do-it-yourselfers have adapted caulking to fill gaps in doors and when assembling pre-fabricated fireplaces and installing firewalls.

Kinds

They can be divided into 3 main groups of materials. You can also add a traditional asbestos seal here, but it is inferior to modern materials in many useful properties.

Therefore, let’s consider the optimal solution to the issue of furnace insulation for your home:

The advantages of this type include several factors:

  1. the ability to maintain geometric shape even with strong heating;
  2. long-term operation of the cord under the influence of fire does not affect the sealing density of the gaps between the stove parts;
  3. The material is absolutely harmless to humans and animals. When heated, harmful gases and substances are not released;
  4. easy to install, the material is quite plastic and flexible;
  5. capable of withstanding a maximum heating temperature of 1200 0.

The only drawback of a ceramic sealing cord is that the material is not cheap compared to its competitors.

The disadvantages of this material include its possible impact on the skin and respiratory system when working with it. Fine fiberglass dust can cause allergic reactions. Therefore, when installing such cords, it is recommended to work in a protective respirator and gloves.

How to choose the right stove and firebox?

First of all, it is important to determine the possibility and need to use a fire-resistant sealing cord. If you need to insulate a small door on a small stove in a bathhouse or garage, then fiberglass or asbestos cord may be suitable. These are not residential premises and small harmful emissions during use will not harm human health.

Pay attention to the size of the cord itself. You should not purchase a thick seal for a small gap on the firebox door. Not only will you waste money, but you will also have to rearrange the door hinges. Manufacturers can additionally treat cords with special impregnations, increasing the price of their products.

A fireproof cord is necessary to seal any gaps or seams exposed to high temperatures. The scope of application of this product is extensive. Heat-resistant cord for stoves and fireplaces is used when installing stove fittings, installing fireplace doors and protective screens, to seal the intersection of chimneys with building structures.

Using a heat-resistant seal, you can protect the internal volumes of living spaces from smoke penetration, and the space of stoves and fireplaces is protected from unwanted access of air into the firebox and chimneys.

Types of cords

Until recently, only asbestos products were used as fire-resistant cords for stoves. When heated, this material can release harmful substances, and dust generated when breaking, cutting or bending asbestos products, entering the body, can have a carcinogenic effect on it.

Currently, three types of cord are most often used:

  • ceramic;
  • fiberglass;
  • basalt.

Products made using ceramics are able to retain their shape under high heat, are durable, easy to install, and are completely harmless to the human body and animals. When heated, ceramics do not emit any harmful substances or gases. This heat-resistant cord can work in ovens at temperatures up to 1200℃. Ceramic material is convenient for almost everything, but its price is quite high.

Fiberglass heat-resistant sealing cord for ovens is more affordable. The maximum temperature it can withstand is no more than 550 ℃. This is quite enough when using such a seal when sealing furnace doors and stove valves. The disadvantages include the harmful effects of this material on the skin, since fiberglass is very brittle and when working, tiny fiberglass dust can get on the skin. When handling this material, it is imperative to use protective equipment - thick gloves and a respirator.

Similar in structure to fiberglass, but less dangerous to use, basalt fire-resistant cord is also used for sealing when installing furnace fittings. This material is made on the basis of basalt threads. It has absolutely no harmful effects on the human body, is environmentally friendly, and can withstand very high temperatures.

Installation

To ensure that the oven door closes tightly, a fire-resistant cord is installed in a special groove around the perimeter. To fix the seal in this groove, use high-temperature silicone sealant. Before applying it, the groove must be thoroughly cleaned of the remnants of the old fire-resistant cord and sealant. After the seal is installed, it is necessary to close the door, pressing it with a locking device and leave in this position for 2-3 hours. During this time, the sealant will polymerize, and the cord will take the required shape and position in the groove.

If it is necessary to protect combustible structures from metal chimneys passing through them, a fire-resistant cord is used somewhat differently. In this case, they wrap it around a metal pipe in the place where it will cross partitions or ceilings. The cord is wound in several layers. The width of the winding should be such as to provide protection for another 5-7 cm outside the building structure. In this case, the fire-resistant cord will also work as a heat insulator.

How to choose

The choice of heat-resistant sealing cord for an oven depends primarily on the tasks that need to be performed with its help.

Purpose

To avoid unnecessary expenses, you need to take into account the location of the object. After all, it is absolutely not necessary to use an expensive ceramic refractory cord in order to seal a conventional valve on the chimney of a heating stove.

The temperature of combustible gases at the outlet of the furnace rarely rises above 350-400 ℃, and products based on basalt threads can be successfully used.

If the stove is located in a bathhouse or in a garage, it would be more advisable to use a cheaper fiberglass or even asbestos seal, since in non-residential premises the impact on the human body will be minimal.

Thickness

Having decided on the type of fireproof sealing cord, you need to pay attention to its thickness. The seal itself is quite hard and it will not be possible to crush it too much in place.

If you use a cord that is too thick to seal the boiler door, for example, after laying it in special grooves, it may prevent it from closing tightly, or you will have to make significant efforts to close the door. This will increase the load on hinges, locks and fastenings.

Additional processing

Very often, fire-resistant cord is impregnated with special compounds to increase heat resistance. Products treated in this way can withstand very high temperatures. But it is unlikely that such a cord will be needed in everyday life or in individual construction, and it makes no sense to overpay a decent amount for it.

It’s another matter if you need to use such seals in furnaces involved in production processes at very high temperatures, about 1000 ℃. In this case, saving, of course, is not worth it.

Many manufacturers supply their products with an adhesive layer. This is very convenient during installation, especially during the initial installation, when the doors, latches, and flaps are still new and the seal easily sticks to them. If the cord is purchased to replace an old one, there is no point in buying products with an adhesive layer.. You will have to spend a lot of work to perfectly prepare the surface for gluing. In this case, it is better to buy a regular fire cord and install it using a high-temperature sealant.
