Varnish for external and internal works. Water varnishes for wood

Wood is a common material that is used to build houses, create interior items, wall and floor cladding. But it requires protection from natural phenomena, otherwise it quickly cracks and fails. Wood varnish will help preserve the decorative properties and texture of wood. It protects the material from moisture and drying, temperature extremes, ultraviolet radiation, decay, fungus, insects and mechanical damage.

The varnish is applied to the surface with a roller, brush, sprayer or compressor. It forms a durable transparent film that protects the wood from premature wear. You can buy wood varnish in a tin can or a plastic bucket in convenient packaging.

There are several classes of varnish: yacht, parquet, furniture and decorative. If you are at a loss with the selection, then call the Kraski-Market consultants - they will help you choose the best option for wood varnishes for your purposes.

Types of varnishes for wood surface treatment

Modern manufacturers produce several types of varnishes for wood, differing in chemical composition and base. You can purchase:

  1. Acrylic lacquer. It is made on a water basis, is considered non-flammable and environmentally friendly.
  2. Alkyd varnish. It is made on the basis of organic solvents and alkyd resins, has good moisture resistance and strength.
  3. Water varnish. It is a dispersion of emulsifiers and a binder.
  4. Antiseptic varnish. To protect the tree from decay, fungus and other biological problems, you should buy antiseptic wood varnishes.

Processing wooden surfaces with colored varnish allows you to emphasize the textural features of a particular type of wood, which creates a beautiful decorative look. The varnish also performs a protective function. It forms a reliable protective layer that prevents the destruction of the wooden surface. Colored varnish for wood for interior work closes the pores of wood, which prevents the release of phytoncides and various natural odors.

Wood varnish for interior work is a special construction-type composition, with which the wooden surfaces of floors, various furniture, doors, stairs and other surfaces made of various types of wood are treated. Colored lacquer provides protection against the penetration of moisture and various cleaning agents, does not allow mold and fungi to destroy wood, and also provides protection against mechanical impact (impact, falling objects, friction).

People choose colored polish for the reason that it creates a certain look. Beautiful and rich tones of the wood texture allow you to carry out any design ideas and solutions. There are several varieties of colored varnish for wood, but the most popular is polyurethane varnish. This is a chemical composition based on polyurethanes and other compounds and additives. This varnish is excellent for processing floorboards, parquet, various laminates (colored floor varnish), wooden walls and ceilings, various elements of wooden interiors, and furniture.

Coating with ready-made colored varnish or tinting and subsequent varnishing of wood?

When a wooden product is new, it does not have such a beautiful appearance. To give it a certain beauty, it is necessary to process it with a special coating. There are two options for coverage. The first option is to cover wooden surfaces with ready-made colored varnish. The second option is pre-tinting in the desired color and subsequent varnishing. What type of coverage is best?

Applying colored varnish can significantly save both money and time. To cover using tinting, you will have to buy tinting and colorless wood varnish, in the case of colored varnish, you only need to purchase varnish. When tinting, it will be necessary to cover the wood in one layer of stain, then several layers of varnish, each layer must dry for a certain time. So it will take quite a long time.

Basic methods for applying colored polyurethane varnish for wood

Before applying colored varnish, it is necessary to perform a number of preparatory procedures. First you need to level the wooden surface. If the irregularities are large enough, then special tools must be used. If the irregularities are small, then they can be processed with a simple sandpaper. The surface must be even and smooth. If there are knots on the surface, they can be removed with a special chisel, and inserts made of the same wood can be glued in their place.

After grinding, all traces of dirt, dust and grease must be removed from the surface. To do this, you can use ordinary detergents and water. Polyurethane-based varnish is best applied to primed surfaces. The primer is applied evenly over the entire surface, very carefully it is necessary to treat hard-to-reach places. The primer must saturate the entire surface. It is best to apply a primer layer with a brush with a sufficiently high stiffness index.

When the primer is completely absorbed, you can start processing with colored varnish. The varnish is applied with a synthetic brush. It should lay down in an even layer. Do not allow sags and streaks. Colored polyurethane varnish is applied in 2-3 layers. Before applying the next layer, the previous one must dry thoroughly. During the final drying, it is necessary to close all doors and windows in the room, air movement must not be allowed.

Benefits of ZAR ULTRA PLUS colored polyurethane varnish

It is made on the basis of a polyurethane compound with the addition of a special stain. The varnish dries very quickly. At the optimum temperature in the room, complete drying occurs in 6 hours. It provides reliable protection of the wooden surface from impacts and other mechanical impacts. The special formula of the varnish allows you to give the wood a rich color.

You can buy high quality polyurethane color varnish at affordable prices in our professional premium paint shop.

The natural beauty of wood with its unique texture cannot be replaced by any modern finishing material. Today, the tree is no less popular than it was 100 and 200 years ago.

However, it is vulnerable to negative factors and requires a film barrier that will protect the structure from moisture, sun, wind drying, and insect pests.

Therefore, if your goal is only to give a shade, introduce a color additive gradually - in small portions and thoroughly mix the composition each time until you get the desired color.

Is it worth it to buy a quick-drying varnish

Which varnish is best for wood - one that dries quickly or one that dries quickly? The drying speed of the paintwork material is one of its main characteristics. Information about how much wood varnish dries, the manufacturer indicates on the label. However, practice has confirmed that strengthening one quality often leads to a weakening of another. For example, the high aesthetic properties of solvent-based products, beautiful shine from the first layer, are not suitable for every customer...

Photo 2. Teknos Semi-Gloss Solvent Lacquer

Long-drying varnish (nitro-lacquer) for wood, along with advantages, also has disadvantages:

  • high price;
  • sharp, unpleasant odor (nitro-varnishes);
  • the product is less environmentally friendly than its water-soluble counterpart, which dries within an hour to the next layer.

The most convenient varnishes for wood are water-borne formulations produced by companies Teknos And Renner, which, when properly applied, are operated for at least 8 years. When updating, the surface does not need to be completely cleaned from the old layer, painting is carried out directly on it.

Photo 3. Teknos water-based varnish

Quick-drying varnish (vodnik) for wood, along with advantages, also has disadvantages:

  • it is impossible to paint in one layer (almost imperceptibly);
  • strongly lifts the pile from the wood, requires careful intermediate grinding;
  • lose to nitro-varnishes in aesthetics.

Matte or glossy

The main types of varnish for wood according to the degree of gloss are glossy, semi-gloss and matte.

Glossy film reflects light rays well, looks aesthetically attractive. Most often, not the highest degree of gloss is chosen, the so-called "semi-gloss".

Photo 4. Facade made of planken painted with Teknos lacquer

Matte and semi-gloss varnish for wood contains a special matting additive. It often precipitates, so matte varnishes must be thoroughly mixed.

In this varnish, gloss is practically absent, but the surface looks matte, while it becomes smooth to the touch and very beautiful.

How to choose wood varnish?

The answer to this question depends on the product being processed and its operating conditions. Both glossy and matte formulations are applied for protection and decoration:

  • musical instruments;
  • furniture;
  • floors, parquet, engineering board;
  • finishing panels.

For furniture, stairs, musical instruments, nitro-varnishes are best suited, especially if they are reinforced with polyurethane or are two-component compositions.

Photo 5. Lacquered oak steps

That is, where high strength and aesthetic properties are needed, it is better to use organic-soluble ones. They are best applied with a brush or air spray.

For lining, block house, planken, etc. water formulations are excellent. Especially if you have to paint a large volume indoors. It is better to paint with water sprayers with a brush or airless spray equipment.

From a practical point of view, a glossy surface wins, as traces of hand touches, dust and other contaminants are clearly visible on a matte surface. However, with improper cleaning, scratches will appear on the shiny surface, and any damage is more clearly visible here.

Transparent, translucent lacquer or covering scheme. What is right for me?

When choosing a wood staining scheme, be guided by the desired effect.

If good protection and durability are important to you, and aesthetics are not important (although rich colors look quite attractive), apply a covering paint to the wooden surface. This coating material is opaque. It completely hides the texture of wood, serves up to 15 years.

Matte varnish for wood does not form a brittle film that can crack and crumble over time. Matte surfaces are easy to care for. It also updates without problems.

Transparent, semi-gloss varnishes (eg AQATOP 2600 Teknos) look beautiful on colored primers. They have a large dry residue, form a beautiful film that does not hide the texture of the wood, but only emphasizes the natural beauty.

The next application of this varnish on wood according to this scheme will be required no earlier than in 5-8 years, and this is if painted outside!

The technology of applying varnish on a wooden surface. How to properly varnish wood?

How to apply varnish on wood? The technologists of our company will tell about it. It is best to give us a call, as different products require a different approach.

Frequently Asked Question: What is the best way to varnish wood? An airbrush is ideal for this purpose (an air vent for nitro-varnishes and an airless vent for water workers), but if it is not available, you can use a brush or roller. Synthetic brushes are well suited for aqueous products, and natural bristles for organic products.

First we prepare the surface. Hairiness and any shallow gouging defects are eliminated by grinding. Movement should be carried out in the direction of the fibers. It is best to use an eccentric machine for grinding. Primary processing is carried out with a coarse grain of 80, grinding is completed with an abrasive P 150-240.

FAQ:

  1. How to varnish wood without streaks? The layer of varnish should be as thin as possible. To do this, the applied composition is poured into a paint bath, where excess varnish is removed using a rolling surface. Staining control is carried out using a table lamp installed on the edge. The light falling on the wood will indicate where there is a lot of varnish, and where it is not at all.
  2. How many coats of varnish should be applied to wood? Usually at least two layers are applied. Some staining schemes require a three-layer application. Between layers, it is necessary to withstand the time recommended by the manufacturer for drying.
  3. Do I need to varnish the wood after impregnation with primer? If you need aesthetics, then varnish is needed. If a construct that is not visible is being processed, it is not advisable to apply the varnish composition, and a primer will provide effective protection.

Varnish consumption per 1m2. Coverage schemes

Varnish consumption per 1 m2 for a tree depends on the density of the wood, the type of lumber (planed, sawn), the concentration of coatings and pre-treatment. Usually, on a planed surface, the consumption does not exceed 1 liter per 10 m2.

How to treat wood before varnishing so that the consumption of the latter is minimal? To do this, use acrylic primer, which creates a film on the surface. The absorbency of lumber is reduced, the consumption of varnish is small.

When painting with brushes, it is recommended to dilute the first layer of varnish with water so that its consistency becomes thinner. The approximate consumption rate of varnish on wood per 1 m2 for the first layer is 130 ml. When applying varnish on the ground or a second layer, the consumption can be halved.

What is moisture resistant varnish. Do I need to pay for it

Moisture-resistant varnish for wood does not let moisture in and does not give it back, as a result of which water does not accumulate under the film and does not destroy the paintwork layer. However, moisture-resistant varnish is more expensive, so it is advisable to use it in conditions with high humidity - a street where rain and snow have a detrimental effect on wood, a bathroom, a kitchen, a sauna. If the room is dry, it makes no sense to overpay for moisture resistance.

What varnishes have a smell? Is it harmful to human health

Paints and varnishes based on organic solvents are endowed with a pungent odor that causes headaches, nausea or allergies in humans. Similar symptoms indicate pathological processes in the body. LKM with a pungent odor, of course, are harmful. Such products must be used for their intended purpose, in specially equipped ventilation rooms.

Odorless water-based varnish for wood is an absolutely safe product for humans. Water-soluble varnishes are very popular today. They are environmentally friendly and endowed with excellent technical characteristics. The coating is aesthetically pleasing, lasts a long time, does not crack under the influence of sunlight.

Any materials eventually lose their original appearance, their former luster and visual appeal. Therefore, there is a need to update them, to restore their former beauty. One of the methods to achieve this goal is painting. For material such as wood, it is recommended to use wood varnish. It will not only renew the surface, but also reliably protect it from external phenomena and further damage.

There are a lot of varieties of varnish coatings, so their choice should be taken carefully. Lacquer for interior woodwork is recommended for indoor use. But it’s not enough just to understand how to choose a varnish for wood, you also need to correctly cover the wooden surface with it.

Varnishing wood with varnish is the final stage of complex and painstaking work, since without proper preliminary preparation it will not be possible to achieve the desired result. Naturally, it is easiest to work with new wood material that has not previously been subjected to any processing. But more often it is necessary to carry out the restoration of the old coating. And in this situation, you have to decide which varnish is best suited to achieve a given goal.

Wood varnishes for interior work must meet the requirements for them. Wood is a natural material that is in demand in many areas of consumer activity. With the help of varnish, you can give the wooden surface different colors or emphasize its natural texture. Depending on the goal pursued, the tonality of the composition is selected. And you can protect the wooden coating and extend its life by creating a durable film.

Timely processing of an old wooden surface will help prevent its premature replacement, rotting, and deformation.

To date, the following types of varnishes for wood are on sale:

  • Oil based. Designed for interior work. Most often use a transparent varnish for wood, but you can pick up other colors. A colorless composition will better emphasize the natural texture of the material. This solution also contains oil and resin.

  • Resin. They are made on the basis of natural resin, in particular - amber. Such a composition is used for the same purposes as oil.

  • Alkyd. Differ in moisture resistance, resistance to change of temperatures and reasonable price. Wood alkyd varnish dries within two days, and serves as protection for wood material for three years. It is made on the basis of alkyd resin and petroleum solvent.

  • Alcoholic. Mainly used to cover furniture and wooden musical instruments. They contain ethyl alcohol with resin dissolved in it.

  • Alkyd-carbamide. They necessarily include an acid hardener, resin and urea. This material is extremely durable, not afraid of moisture, has a strong luster. It serves as an excellent coating for wood, including parquet.

  • Epoxy two-component varnish. After application, the epoxy resin, which is part of the composition, serves as a protective film. It differs in hardness, moisture resistance. This is the best lacquer that is used for surface treatment of wooden doors, solid wood and parquet.

  • Polyester. Made from polyester resin. They are applied to a wooden surface with a special gun, forming a dense, transparent, shiny, water-resistant film. Recommended for use on surfaces that require a thick glossy film.

  • Nitrocellulose. They contain an organic solvent, cellulose nitrate, resins and plasticizers. The coated surface is excellent for polishing.

  • Acrylic urethane. Created on the basis of alkyd resin and organic solvent. The best for wood from this group is Olympus Orion - acrylic varnish. Differs in durability of a covering, resistance to influence of moisture and environmental friendliness.

  • Polyurethane. They are based on hardeners and solvents. They have a pungent odor, harden for a long time and form a reliable protective film.

  • Acrylic. Often slightly diluted with water. They are odorless, environmentally friendly to use, and also available in a variety of colors.

It is necessary to choose paintwork materials taking into account the conditions in which it will be operated. This choice depends on the imposed mechanical loads, the level of humidity, and the temperature in the room.

On the video: an overview of acrylic varnish on wood.

Surface preparation

Cracks, abrasions, scratches and other damage may appear on the surface of wooden materials during their operation. Penetrated particles of grease and dust can even change the color of the material, not to mention its texture. Therefore, preparatory measures are necessary. It is necessary to remove the top layer of the coating that has become unusable before applying a layer of varnish on it.

It is also advisable to use a wood preservative to reliably protect the material from further destruction and pests.

There are the following ways to remove the old coating:

  • special washing method;
  • by thermal exposure;
  • mechanical action.

Removing the previous layer is a rather time-consuming task and does not tolerate haste. The first method involves applying a special agent to the surface to be prepared. In this case, you need to use personal protective equipment. From above, the material is covered with a film, forming a kind of compress. During the day, evaporation occurs, and then the old coating is removed with a spatula. The completely cleaned surface is thoroughly washed with warm water. Then it is polished, a primer is applied.

As for the second method, here you can use a building hair dryer or a blowtorch. When heated, the top layer softens, and then removed with a spatula. Good heat treatment is quite effective, but you need to monitor the heating temperature. In the process of work, the room must be ventilated. It is recommended to moisten the surface covered with an old layer of varnish or paint before starting the heat treatment.

The mechanical method involves removing the obsolete layer with a grinder or sanding with an emery cloth. Only after cleaning and priming the surface of the material, it is possible to carry out the varnishing process. Using antiseptic agents for treating wood, you can protect it from destruction and damage by pathogenic microbes.

Choice of lacquer color

The main task of wood finishing is to give it an attractive appearance. LKM are presented in a wide palette of colors, so everyone can choose the perfect color for their own interior. Colored varnish has a number of significant advantages:

  • protects the surface from adverse effects;
  • performs decorative functions in interior design;
  • increases the life of the material.

It is desirable to choose a color according to the type of wood. If it is a nut, then the varnish needs to be matched to it.

Often a glossy color is used in the interior, especially if the room is dark. There is also a choice of browns, dark shades and grey. However, the best way to emphasize the natural structure of the tree is a colorless varnish.

When choosing, you need to consider that each color has many shades. If you want to lacquer walnut-colored parquet, you can get a result from a beige shade to a black coffee color. Colors such as wenge and mahogany are also popular among users. When choosing a wood varnish, you need to understand that it is not necessary to achieve a uniform surface as a result of applying the composition. Sometimes you just need to give the coating a certain tone without changing the texture, and not paint over it completely.

Aqualac is a modern protective and decorative water-based paintwork material. Water-based varnishes for wood ideally protect the wooden surface from the adverse effects of external environmental factors. Recently, this type of varnish has become very popular and in demand among fans of eco-housing. Water-based varnish on wood differs from other paints and varnishes in environmental friendliness. Aqualac does not contain harmful components, does not have a strong odor, does not emit toxic fumes, provides high-quality wood protection, and is easy to use.

What is wood varnish

Aqualac is an environmentally friendly water-based paintwork material. It contains 85% water and no more than 15% solvents. Before purchasing a water varnish for wood, you must carefully read its component composition and manufacturer's recommendations, carefully study the instructions for use. Due to the large percentage of the water component, aqualak has restrictions on application to some types of wood.

It is not always possible to move to another room during the repair work. Paints and varnishes emit toxic fumes when dried. The issue of environmental cleanliness is especially acute if the family has small children, pets, or someone who suffers from allergies. In such cases, an excellent solution would be to choose a water-based varnish for wood. This paint and varnish material is easily applied to the surface, dries quickly, has no pungent odor, does not emit toxic substances, and does not cause allergic reactions.

Features of water-based varnishes on wood

The composition of the water-based floor lacquer includes water and binding components - synthetic resins, which are evenly distributed in the water base with a high-speed mixer.

The manufacturing process of paint and varnish material resembles dough kneading. First, binders, emulsifiers are poured into the water and mixed until smooth. The resulting composition should not exfoliate. At the next stage of manufacture, a solvent is added to the mixture, which is an obligatory film-forming component.

The described manufacturing technology makes it possible to obtain an environmentally friendly paintwork material that is harmless to humans and animals. When applying a water-based varnish to wood, the water component dries first. The film-forming component (solvent) dilutes the binding components, and then dries completely, leaving a protective layer on the surface covered with the product. Hardening occurs quickly enough, not accompanied by an unpleasant odor.

By composition, water-based varnishes for wood are divided into:

  1. One-component - made on the basis of one polymer: acrylic resin or polyurethane.
  2. Two-component - made on the basis of two components: acrylic resin plus polyurethane.

Acrylic or polyurethane, which are part of scuba diving, give specific properties to the paintwork material. Polyurethane increases the durability of the coating and is recommended for use in rooms with a high degree of exploitation. The wooden surface, varnished with polyurethane, is additionally protected from external influences:

  • high load;
  • spilled alcohol;
  • chemical influences.

Unlike varnishes with other components, made on the basis of oil, resin, ethyl alcohol, water-based varnish for wood has undeniable advantages:

  • dries quickly;
  • does not have a sharp unpleasant odor;
  • does not emit toxic substances;
  • skips steam;
  • fireproof;
  • provides good adhesion - firmly binds to a wooden surface;
  • easy to use - quickly and easily diluted with water, applied to the surface with a roller;
  • protects the tree from the appearance of mold and fungi;
  • sold at an affordable price.

The disadvantages of water-based varnish for wood include the insufficient strength of the resulting coating. Therefore, scuba diving is more suitable for indoor work. When applying the paintwork material indoors, the treated surface should not be adversely affected by external factors, such as sudden temperature changes, strong winds, direct sunlight, frost.

It is necessary to store water-based varnish in a heated room, in no case allow it to freeze, since the main component of the scuba tank is water.

Types of water-based varnishes on wood

Acrylic water based varnish

It is recommended to use acrylic water-based varnish for wood in rooms that do not experience a large operational load: bedrooms, children's rooms. After the acrylic varnish has completely dried, a transparent protective film forms on the wooden surface. The thin coating is resistant to friction and household detergents.

Before applying a water-based acrylic varnish for wood on the floor surface, thorough preparation should be carried out: clean from dirt and dust, sand until a matte effect appears.

The water-based acrylic lacquer contains a plastic dispersion that is completely soluble in the water base. To improve the bond of the paint and varnish material with a wooden surface, to make the coating more durable and resistant to external factors, the composition of the varnish also includes other components:

  • coalescent (7-8%) - an organic solvent in the composition of water-based varnishes on wood acts as a plasticizer, provides the formation of a protective film;
  • polyurethane thickener (3.5%) - a hydrophobized polymer is added to increase the viscosity of the water-based varnish, allowing you to obtain the necessary thickness of the paint and varnish;
  • styrene-acrylic copolymer, which is a white anionic aqueous emulsion used for surface coating;
  • mineral oil emulsion prevents foaming;
  • a variety of preservatives provide protection against pathogenic organisms;
  • wax additives, anti-crater additives, plasticizers level the wooden surface, give it a glossy sheen.

Two-component water-based varnish

A two-component, water-based lacquer designed for covering wooden surfaces that are subjected to frequent mechanical stress. This type of scuba suit well protects the surface in case of contact with chemicals. Two-component water-based varnish for wood belongs to complex mixtures, it is better to entrust it to professionals.

Before using a two-component water-based varnish on wood, it is necessary to thoroughly (at least 5 minutes) mix the base and hardener until a homogeneous mass is used with a low-speed drill. If the proportions are not respected or the mixing is poor, the curing of the protective layer will be uneven. For a high-quality floor primer, up to 30% of water is added to the finished composition and mixed well.

Coating the wooden surface with water-based varnish is carried out only after applying the primer, not earlier than after 16 hours. The composition is applied to the floor with a special roller or brush. At the end of the work, all tools can be cleaned with water and special detergents.

After treating the floor with a water-based wood varnish, the protective film will become as resistant to chemical attack and wear as possible after only two weeks. Until this time, it is necessary to treat the coating very carefully: walk carefully, do not expose the surface to mechanical stress and hard cleaning, clean the floor with a soft cloth or sponge dipped in a light cleaning solution.

Gloss water-based varnish

A glossy water-based varnish is characterized by rapid drying, since the water in its composition evaporates faster than inorganic substances. For the same reason, it will not be difficult to easily clean the tools after working with this paint and varnish. The protective functions of a glossy varnish are the same as those of other types of water-based varnish for wood - protecting the surface from abrasion, mechanical damage, exposure to sunlight and moisture.

Glossy water-based varnish is suitable not only for covering wood, but also for painting paper wallpapers, primed drywall, plaster, concrete. Manufacturers offer a wide selection of shades of paintwork material.

Glossy scuba, like other water-based products, is safe and environmentally friendly. After varnishing, the water droplets evaporate, providing mixing and solidification of the remaining components in the mixture. As a result, a special protective film is formed on the varnished surface. There are no solvents in the composition of the varnish, therefore the varnish does not have a pungent odor, does not emit toxic substances when dried, and, therefore, does not cause allergic reactions, does not adversely affect the health of people and pets.

How to apply water varnish on wood

Water-based varnishes on wood can be used for both interior and exterior work. The main condition is the minimum air humidity during the paintwork. The composition is poorly absorbed into a damp wooden surface. At high humidity, the varnish penetrates unevenly into the pores of the wood, stains and smudges appear on the surface.

A thin protective film, which is formed after the varnish has dried, ensures the vapor permeability of the wood, makes the coated surface water-repellent.

A surface treated with water-based wood varnish must be protected from constant contact with water, but moderate wet cleaning does no harm. It is better to clean wood products with a soapy solution with the addition of non-aggressive detergents. Water-based paints and varnishes are presented in a wide range: for interior finishing works, for covering wooden cladding of building facades, resistant to ultraviolet rays, for processing garden buildings, for processing lining. Aqualac is the ideal product for wood surfaces in poorly ventilated areas.

For processing a wooden floor with a high operational load, it is better to choose a different type of varnish. The fact is that the protective film of water-based varnish for wood is subject to rapid abrasion during intensive use of the surface. Some manufacturers produce special scuba shoes for covering wooden floors and parquet. But it should be noted that such paints and varnishes have some limitations. They are not recommended for wood surfaces that are operated at low temperatures.

Choose color and shine

On the market of paints and varnishes, water-based varnishes for wood are presented in various colors and shades. When using other types of similar products, the choice of color combinations is difficult. The use of aqualak provides ample opportunities in the selection of the desired color scheme to preserve the natural texture of wood.

Catalogs of manufacturers of paints and varnishes will help determine the desired color. The variety of colors allows you to select different combinations of shades, change the color depth. To do this, you can apply a different number of layers, use different compositions.

The use of water-based varnishes on wood allows you to get three types of coating:

  • matte;
  • semi-gloss;
  • glossy.

The type of coating depends on the thickness of the protective film. To obtain a matte surface, it is enough to apply a small number of layers of varnish. To give the tree a gloss, you need to increase the number of layers applied. The more varnish applied to the surface, the more smooth and shiny it looks.

Surface preparation for varnishing

Before applying a water-based varnish for wood, it is necessary to carefully prepare the surface:

  • smooth out all irregularities and sand;
  • putty chips, dents, holes and other defects;
  • re-sand the surface with fine sandpaper;
  • clean the floor with a cloth soaked in soapy water from sanding residues and dust;
  • dry well;
  • treat with a special primer on wood and wait until it dries completely;
  • re-treat with a primer;
  • after the surface is completely dry, you can start varnishing.

Important! Before applying the first coat of water-based varnish, the surface must be treated with a special primer for wood.

Priming will protect the wood from the adverse effects of varnish. It is better to apply the primer in two layers. It can be purchased along with the appropriate tool. Each manufacturer offers a special primer in one line with a paintwork material.

varnishing process

Water-based varnish for wood must be thoroughly mixed. If the consistency is too thick, it can be thinned with water. It is recommended to check the quality of the coating on a small area of wood of the same type and treatment. To apply scuba lacquer on a wooden surface, it is better to use a roller.

The number of layers depends on the characteristics of the lacquer, the properties of the wood and the desired type of finish: matt, semi-gloss, glossy. To obtain a high-quality result, from three (minimum quantity) to seven layers (strong protection) are applied.

In the process of application, high humidity and drafts in the room should be excluded, and direct ultraviolet rays should not be allowed to fall on the surface to be painted. These external factors negatively affect the speed and quality of drying of the surface coated with water-based varnish. All paint and varnish work must be carried out in accordance with safety regulations and compliance with all technological requirements. The exact implementation of the manufacturer's recommendations will avoid defects, stains, streaks, streaks on the coated surface.

In order for the color to turn out to be even, sustained in one tone, it is necessary to apply varnish immediately to the entire wooden surface. When covering individual areas, the layers dry unevenly, a difference in shades appears, the boundaries of areas painted at different times appear.

Advice! To obtain a perfectly smooth surface, it is recommended to sand the penultimate layer of dried varnish with fine sandpaper. Then the surface is thoroughly cleaned of dust and again covered with one or two layers of water-based varnish.

When choosing an acrylic water-based varnish for wood, it should be taken into account that the strength of the protective layer is formed gradually. To avoid chips and scratches, it is not recommended to intensively use the freshly coated surface during the first two months. Gentle wet cleaning is allowed.
