With or without fan

A mini oven is a miniature electric version of the oven, which is why it is also called a mini oven. By the type of heating, there are two types of these devices: models with convection and those that work only with heating elements. In the first case, the circulation and distribution of hot air flows occurs due to the operation of the fan.

The second type includes appliances with the same upper and lower heating elements, but without convection. This makes it possible to choose the heating option: top, bottom, or both at once. Manufacturers assure that in this way the oven heats up evenly and as quickly as possible. All participants in our test belong to the latter category. The control of mini-stoves is either mechanical or electronic (like the Daewoo model). But in any case, in order to put the device into operation, you need to select and set the operating mode, set the thermostat regulator to a certain heating temperature and set the required time on the timer. The process is controlled automatically and ends with a sound signal, after which the program is turned off. However, you should not rely entirely on technology: from time to time you still need to observe the operation of the stove.

Often, housewives use an open oven door as a support for a baking sheet. And I must say that this is provided for in the GOST. The testers carried out the following experiment: the stove was installed on the edge of the table, the door was opened and a load was carefully placed in its center (according to GOST, the door must withstand a load weighing up to 3.5 kg). Only the model was subjected to this test. Daewoo (for the rest of the test participants, the doors are not fixed in a horizontal position at all). But she also did not please with “endurance”: she began to lose stability already under a weight of 1 kg. So if the stove is on the edge of the table, in no case use it as a stand - the device may tip over!

Take care of your hands!

High temperatures are generated in the mini ovens during operation. Therefore, it was very important to find out how hot their outer surfaces are and whether it is possible to get burned on them. As tests have shown, we were not worried in vain. In GOST R 52161.1-2004 “Safety of household and similar electrical appliances. Part 1. General requirements”It is said that handles and other parts of the stoves, which may come into contact when opening the door, should not heat up above 60 gr. Ts. In fact, the probability of getting a burn is minimized only for the sample Severinbecause the door has a heat-insulating cover. Have DeLonghi the temperature on some parts of the handle reaches 70 gr. C. For other stoves, the door heats up to 110–120 gr. Ts, and there is no additional protection on it. Therefore, the risk of getting burned is very high. In addition, the cases of all models, except for the Severin, heat up above 60 grams. C, which also does not comply with GOST.

But these are not all violations. According to GOST R 52161.2.9-2006 “Safety of household and similar electrical appliances. Part 2.9. Particular requirements for grills, toasters and similar portable cooking utensils ”The shelves in ovens must slide easily in the supports and not fall out of the slots when moved. However, even here our “test subjects” were not up to par. This item corresponds only to a sample Daewoo... Have DeLonghi the grate is difficult to move along the guides. In other dough models, they, on the contrary, hang in the grooves. This is quite dangerous: if the grate is inadvertently pulled out, it can topple over together with the dish standing on it.

Taking into account all these design flaws, the final safety ratings were lowered for all models of mini-ovens (see table 2), and claims were sent to manufacturers.

What do we have for breakfast?

Now it's time to move on to the most “mouth-watering” challenge - cooking. For the purity of the experiment, all ovens worked under the same conditions, and the same amount of food was previously measured for them. The only thing left is to try and compare.

Who doesn't love the aroma of baked bread! We enjoyed it a lot during the first experiment, when we were frying croutons and making toast with cheese.

Samples Scarlett, Rolsen and Daewoo (in this and in other types of tests, dishes in this oven were cooked with more high temperaturesthan the manufacturer recommends. Otherwise, they are underprotected.) pleased the testers: the croutons fried evenly, dried up moderately and acquired the taste inherent in real croutons.

Cheese toast was also great, especially for Severin and Scarlett: the middle of the bread remained soft, and the outside was decorated with a crispy crust. The cheese melted well and the toast turned light golden. Bake DeLonghi (In this and other tests, the dishes in this oven were cooked at lower temperatures than the manufacturer recommends. What a breakfast without an omelet! In general, all the samples cooked it on a solid “four”: the dish was fried with dignity, acquired a delicate porous consistency, but did not rise in any of the ovens and even stuck a little to the baking sheet (see photo on the right).

How to please yourself for lunch? We started with the easiest one - baked potatoes. All models coped with this task with a bang. Especially stood out Scarlett and DeLonghi: potatoes in them turned out to be a homogeneous consistency, crumbly, moderately dry.

We tried to cook pumpkin in the stoves in the same way: it turned out to be a little tough, but baked quite well, retained its bright color and did not lose its juiciness.

The testers did not pass by the meat either: the ovens were given the task to cook boiled pork. To complicate the task, bought a chop (this part of pork is the toughest). As a result, all samples showed well-done meat with a slightly dry crust. The softest, juicy boiled pork turned out to be DeLonghi and Severin.

It's time for an afternoon snack!

For afternoon tea, it was decided to cook a charlotte. In all the stoves, it came out fluffy, baked, with a crispy crust. The apples did not drown in the dough, but retained their taste. But the charlotte from Ariete... In other models, it turned out to be not so light and airy.

In general, the stoves did a good job with cooking meringues. The cakes were baked and crunchy nicely, but they didn't rise too high.
