Application of a primer. Use of Technicol bitumen primer in construction

This is the material used for preliminary preparation surfaces before applying any coating.

More commonly, it is a primer. The purpose of priming (surface treatment primer ) is to strengthen porous and weak substrates, prevent dust formation, as well as ensure reliable adhesion with a polymer coating on any construction surfaces.

The process of preparing the substrate for application polymer coatings consists of sanding (in order to remove surface contaminants), removing dust and filling chips and cavities. At the same time, weakly fixed particles and fine dust, clogged in the pores of the surface, appear on the surface. It is impossible to remove such particles mechanically, and the particles themselves prevent good adhesion to the surface.

You should always remember that the key to success can only be the obligatory high-quality preparation of the foundation. therefore primers-primers play a very important role in construction. In each specific case, you should seek instructions and clarifications from manufacturers and suppliers of paints and varnishes.

According to the base material primersso called: polyurethane primer, epoxy primer, bituminous primeretc.

Bituminous primer is material that is made from organic solvents and high quality bitumen, due to which it has high heat resistance and penetrating ability, which means that bitumen primer absorbs deeply into the structure of the treated surface and provides a long-lasting effect. For bituminous primer characterized by a short drying time and an absolute absence of stickiness, which makes it an almost irreplaceable and convenient material for gluing waterproofing.

It is applied for priming of concrete slabs, cement-sand screed, etc. before laying welded and self-adhesive roofing and waterproofing materials. Provides good adhesion of waterproofing materials to porous, rough and dusty surfaces using a deep penetrating fast drying agent.

There are several types bituminous primerswith a clearly defined purpose:

  • roofing primerintended for surface correction prior to laying / welding roofing materials on porous or rough surfaces. Roofing primercan be used as an adhesive for various roll and sheet waterproofing materials.
  • road is used as a binder for crushed stone in the construction / repair of roadways.
  • primerfor insulating coatings of pipelines it is intended to increase adhesion with the covering material and as an anti-corrosion compound.

Universal bituminous primer ready It is used to insulate any surfaces that do not require the use of a specialized compound.

Primer application method

Before applying primerit is required to carefully prepare the base - to eliminate defects, to clean from foreign particles that can prevent layers from sticking together, and to dry.

After preparation of the base, the primer, if necessary, is diluted with a solvent (white spirit, gasoline, kerosene, nefras) and mixed thoroughly. Direct application to the surface can be carried out different ways - using a brush, rubber squeegee, nylon brush, roller or by spraying.

When applied primersafety precautions must be strictly observed, since it contains flammable components. In this regard, work with the material is possible only away from open fire (including smoking is prohibited), and the application specialist must work in goggles and gloves. In addition, the construction site must be equipped with fire extinguishing equipment.

Recommendations... Processing primershould be carried out only in dry weather at a temperature of minus 20 ° C. In addition, during the day, the primed base should be protected from rain or moisture in another way. If processing is carried out inside a building, the area must be thoroughly ventilated.

Primer benefits

  • It has good elasticity.
  • Protects the surface from excessive water absorption.
  • It can be used in a wide temperature range (from –50 ° С to + 120 ° С).
  • Dries quickly.
  • Easy to use.
  • Easily penetrates the impregnated surface.

It is important to know

1. Coating quality 80% depends on the quality of the preparation of the substrate, therefore you should always use primer, even on grounds it is enough good quality.
2. The primer reduces absorption of water into the substrate, which allows the mixture to be applied in a thinner layer, which leads to material savings and therefore money.

An important role in the further operation of any structure is played by right choice and high-quality manufacturing of an element such as a foundation. But making the foundation of the house well is half the battle. The main task is to properly protect it from adverse environmental factors. This task, among other things, helps to cope with a special liquid - a primer for waterproofing the foundation.

Types of waterproofing

The main material for the manufacture of many types of foundations is a concrete mixture, often reinforced with an additional steel reinforced frame. With all its positive properties sand-cement mixture with crushed stone has one significant drawback - low resistance to moisture. In this regard, for the long-term operation of concrete products, they must be isolated from both atmospheric and ground water.

In the last century, bitumen was the main option for waterproofing the finished foundation. It is obtained by an artificial method as a product of oil, coal and other hydrocarbons processing, as well as extracted in its natural form. For using bitumen as coating waterproofing it had to be heated to a liquid state and applied exclusively hot.

Later, given the good solubility of the substance in organic solvents, they began to use ready-made waterproofing materials with a liquid consistency, which were called mastics. Unlike natural or synthesized bitumen in its pure form, waterproofing the foundation with the help of these compositions sometimes did not require heating, which reduced the risk of burns when working with them.

Currently, the following types of mastics are used as a coating waterproofing:

  1. Bituminous - is a solution of bitumen in solvents with various additives. Used cold.
  2. Bitumen-rubber is made on the basis of bitumen with the addition of crumb rubber and plasticizer. To bring the mastic into working condition, it must be heated.
  3. Bitumen-polymer mastic contains both classic bitumen and various artificial substances that improve the properties of the composition.
  4. Polymer mastic is devoid of bitumen content.

To prepare for waterproofing the foundation, its surface is recommended to be additionally processed. The best way to improve the adhesion of mastic to a concrete base is a liquid solution of bitumen in organic solvents, called a primer.

Bituminous foundation primer

The bituminous primer for waterproofing the foundation is quite liquid, which allows it to be applied in various ways, both manual and mechanical. Its effect is comparable to that of a classic building primer, which is used to treat walls before wallpapering and other roll materials. The foundation must be primed to the full depth of its installation.

Apply the foundation primer using a classic hard-bristled paint brush. To increase the processing speed, it is better to use the widest possible flute. Also, the processing speed can be increased by using a paint roller with a fur coat, which is held in the hand or placed on a long wooden handle.

Instead of using traditional painting tools, priming the foundation can be done with a regular floor brush. The viscosity of the composition allows the use of such a non-standard "brush" on a long handle. This is especially useful when working on the upper part of the foundation, as well as when working on the above-ground part of the building base.

We prime the foundation with primer correctly

Before applying coating waterproofing or sticking roll materials, it is necessary to perform a number of preparatory operations and apply a bitumen primer for the foundation to the entire base area. The general scheme of work is as follows:

  1. First of all, it is necessary to provide an approach to the place of work. For this, the soil is removed from the foundation at a distance of at least one meter.
  2. Further concrete base must be allowed to dry completely. This is especially true if the foundation has not been covered. waterproofing materials in a timely manner.
  3. The next stage is cleaning the surface of the foundation from lagging concrete particles, soil residues and other debris. For this purpose, various brushes are used with both metal and synthetic bristles.
  4. After completing all preparatory work the foundation is directly waterproofed with a primer. For this, the composition is applied in the above way, trying to cover the entire surface of the base of the house or bath without gaps. Many of today's bituminous primers have very short dry times. This allows three to four layers of primer to be applied during daylight hours with complete drying of each layer.
  5. After the last layer is completely dry, which is checked by touching it to touch, you can apply the previously selected type of foundation waterproofing.

Necessary and sufficient waterproofing layer

Not everyone knows what is the required thickness of the waterproofing layer, which must be applied to the aboveground and underground parts of the foundation. The part of the base located below the soil level is constantly exposed to moisture from both the atmosphere and from below from the groundwater side.

Bitumen Primer "Technicol" is a homogeneous black liquid derived from a solution of petroleum bitumen. The softening point of the Primer is not less than 80 C. It does not contain foreign inclusions and inhomogeneities. Primer "Technicol" is an environmentally friendly material that does not contain toxic solvents, for example: toluene

Bituminous primers simplify roofing and waterproofing works. These materials make it possible to shorten the work time and, as a result, improve the quality of waterproofing.

Bituminous primer is sold in 2 varieties: ready-to-use and concentrated.

The finished primer does not need any preliminary procedures, excluding thorough mixing. The use of the finished composition reduces the cost construction works, reduces the time, and increases the speed of work.

The concentrated primer is diluted with an organic solvent 1.0: 1.5 or 1: 2.0 before use.

To increase the adhesion strength of rolled materials with a waterproofing base, the working surface must be treated with one of the primers. The primer is thoroughly mixed with a drill, with a nozzle at low speeds.

Primed with bituminous primer: concrete surfaces, reinforced concrete, metal structures, asbestos cement, wooden frames, other porous materials ...

Bituminous primer "Technicol" is used both by itself and with other weldable and self-adhesive materials.

Bituminous primer is used before waterproofing works such types of work: laying the base flat roofs, foundation insulation, waterproofing underground structures and structures, construction of bridge spans, insulation of internal surfaces of pipelines.

A side effect of the application is the protection of metal surfaces from corrosion.

Production and delivery bituminous primer carried out in the form of concentrated solutions. Before using such a solution, it must be diluted according to the instructions. To prepare the primer, special solvents or an economical method are used: kerosene, gasoline or white spirit.

Must be diluted bituminous primer in proportions 1.0: 1.0, or 1.0: 0.5. When diluting the primer, be guided by the state of the work surfaces. The primer is insensitive to ambient temperature during application.

Depending on the tasks set, the types of primers are chosen:

1. The primer is bituminous.

It is a solution of petroleum bitumen in special organic solvents. It is intended for preliminary preparation of the base surface before laying self-adhesive roofing, weld-on, waterproofing materials.

2. Bitumen-polymer primer. TechnoNIKOL No. 3.

It is a polymer solution consisting of petroleum bitumen, adhesive additives, and a hydrocarbon solvent. It is used before laying other types of bitumen, and for processing a wide range of surfaces in building structures, before laying the waterproofing itself. The specially developed composition significantly reduces the drying time of the primer, which allows to protect surfaces prone to corrosion in the shortest possible time.

Production of work: This type of primer, like others, is thoroughly mixed before use. The primer is applied to the work surface with a brush or nylon brush. When used correctly, the primer saturates and hardens the surface, which ensures a strong adhesion of the substrate to both the waterproofing coating and the substrate.

3. Bituminous emulsion primer, TechnoNIKOL No. 4.

It is an aqueous emulsion of petroleum bitumen, modified with technological additives. The primer does not contain solvents, is fireproof and intended for interior use. The emulsion primer can be applied to dry or wet substrates. To apply the Technonikol primer, use a brush, which allows you to most effectively rub the primer into the base. The roller evenly distributes the composition over the surface. The brush is used for priming complex, small areas of the base. For large volumes of surface to be treated, it is better to use an airless spraying unit.

  • Types of bituminous primers

Bituminous primer, or bitumen primer, is a homogeneous composition, mainly black in color, which is produced by mixing oil bitumen and organic solvents. The latter are usually white spirit and kerosene.

A bituminous primer simplifies the waterproofing process due to its fast drying, heat resistance and breathability.

Bitumen primer is designed to simplify the waterproofing process. This primer is characterized by short drying times, excellent heat resistance and breathability. Used for priming concrete slabs, sand-cement screed, underground structures and etc.

Bituminous primer is supplied mainly in the form of a concentrated solution, when diluting it, you must strictly follow the instructions on the package.

Important! Take precautions when working with this type of primer. Under no circumstances should the concentrate be opened, diluted, or spilled near an open flame. However, there are special emulsion primers that do not fall under the definition of flammable, but such primers are suitable exclusively for interior work.

The advantages of using a bituminous primer

The bituminous primer is applied with a brush or roller.

  1. It is used in the temperature range from -50 ° С to + 120 ° С. The primer is very easy to use, as it does not require compliance with the temperature regime. The ambient temperature does not affect its waterproofing properties.
  2. Differs in good elasticity.
  3. Dries quickly. Drying time depends on the type of bituminous primer and usually ranges from 1-5 hours. Such a tool is very important when carrying out urgent repair and insulation work.
  4. Ease of use. Apply to a clean, dry surface with a roller, brush, rubber squeegee. It does not require complex manipulations before application, it is easy to use.
  5. Easily penetrates the surface, almost never requires reapplication.

Types of bituminous primers

There are these types of bituminous primers that have a clear purpose:

Various types of primers can be used for waterproofing roofs, for paving and for treating pipelines.

  1. Roofing. This type of primer is used to correct surface imperfections before installing roofing materials on a porous substrate. It is also used as an adhesive for a wide variety of sheet and roll waterproofing materials.
  2. Road. This type of bituminous primer is intended for bonding crushed stone during paving.
  3. Bitumen primer for pipelines. Designed to increase the adhesion coefficient of surfaces of bodies that are heterogeneous. Has anti-corrosion properties.
  4. Universal. It is used on any surfaces that do not require the application of specialized compounds.

The quality of bituminous primers plays an important role when it comes to carrying out high-quality moisture-proofing works. Choose products at specialized points of sale, demand quality certificates if the origin of the materials causes distrust.

Ask which primers are best for your situation, ask if the store has products different manufacturers... If the assortment is represented by only one manufacturer, do not be lazy to look for other stores in which you will be presented with a choice of products from several manufacturers. Be sure to check if a particular bitumen primer is suitable for a particular job and material.

Choose a product of the middle price category, because what is expensive is not always of high quality, but too cheap materials can lead to unpleasant consequences, and this is unacceptable in construction and installation work.
