New Year

England celebrates the New Year from the evening of December 31st into January 1st. Traditionally it is not as widely celebrated as Christmas, but the year 2000 saw a large change. For instance people did not used to celebrate New Year with fireworks (they were reserved for Bonfire Night), but last year and this all across England people were setting off fireworks on the stroke of midnight.

More traditionally, on the stroke of midnight, people open the back door (to let the old year out) and ask the first dark haired man to be seen to come through the front door carrying salt, coal and bread. This means that the following year everyone in the house will have enough to eat (bread), enough money (salt) and be warm enough (coal).

For example, people did not use fireworks to celebrate the New Year (they were reserved for Bonfire Night), but now all over England people are setting off fireworks at midnight.
At midnight, people open the back door (so the old year is gone) and ask the first dark-haired man to come in through the front door with salt, coal and bread. This means that every next year there will be enough food (bread), money (salt) and heat (coal) in the house.

My mistressʻeyes are nothing like the sun;

Coral is far more red than her lips red;

If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;

If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head

I have seen roses damask`d, red and white,

But no such roses see I in her cheeks;

And in some perfumes is there more delight

Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.

I love to hear her speak, yet well I know

That music hath a far more pleasing sound:

I great I never saw a goddess go, -

My mistress when she walks treads on the ground.

And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare

As any she belied with false compare.

Sonnet 130, trans.

Her eyes don't look like stars

You can't call your mouth corals,

Open skin is not snow-white,

And a strand is twisted with black wire.

With a damask rose, scarlet or white,

You can't compare the shade of these cheeks

And the body smells like the body smells

Not like a delicate violet petal.

You will not find perfect lines in it,

Special light on the forehead

I don't know how the goddesses walk

But sweetheart walks on the ground.

And yet she will hardly yield to those

Whom they slandered in comparisons lush.

Easter is the most important holiday of the year. Although the Christian religion gave the world Easter as we know it today, the celebration owes it’s name and many of it’s customs and symbols to a pagan festival called Eastre.

Eostre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of springtime and sunrise, got her name from the world east, where the sun rises.

Every spring northern European peoples celebrated the festival of Eostre to honor the awakening of new life in nature.

Christians related the rising of the sun to the resurrection of Jesus and their own spiritual rebirth.

Many modern Easter symbols come from pagan times.

The egg, for instance, was a fertility symbol long before the Christian era.

In Christian times the egg took on a new meaning symbolizing the tomb from which Christ rose. The ancient custom of dying eggs at Easter time is still very popular.

The Easter bunny also originated in pre-Christian fertility lore.

The rabbit was the most fertile animal our ancestors knew so they selected it as a symbol a new life.

Today, children enjoy eating candy bunnies and listening to stories about the Easter bunny, who supposedly brings Easter eggs in a fancy basket.

Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday and is celebrated as a holiday in some largely Christian cultures.

Initially Easter (Easter) was a pagan festival in honor of the goddess of dawn and spring, Iostra. Easter was a holiday of revitalizing nature after winter.

Easter eggs are given to each other on Palm Sunday. The Easter egg is a symbol of new life. The tradition of Easter eggs may have originated at a time when the church forbade them to be eaten during Lent, 40 days before Easter.

Religious services are held at dawn on Easter Day. Organ music concerts are held in Catholic churches. It is customary to wear new clothes on this day, which symbolizes the end of the bad weather season and the onset of spring.

Traditional Easter games are also popular in Britain. Adults hide their eggs, and children, waking up in the morning, go looking. Whoever finds the largest number will receive a prize. Easter eggs are rolled outdoors, on a grassy slope. Their goal is to roll the egg the farthest without breaking the egg.

The whole family gathers for Sunday lunch.

Guy Fawkes` Night

In 1605 King James I was on the throne. As a Protestant, he was very unpopular with Roman Catholics. Some of them planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament on the 5th of November of that year, when the King was going to open Parliament. Under the House of Lords they stored thirty-six barrels of gunpowder, which were to be exploded by a man called Guy Fawkes. However, one of the plotters spoke about these plans and Fawkes was discovered, arrested and later hanged. Since that day the English traditionally celebrate on the 5th of November by burning a dummy, made of straw and old clothes, on a bonfire, at the same time letting off fireworks. This dummy is called a “guy” (like Guy Fawkes) and children can often be seen on the pavements before the 5th of November saying, “Penny for the guy”. If they collect enough money they can buy some fireworks.

Guy Fawkes Night

In Britain, Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night is annually celebrated - a folk festival during which people throughout the country light bonfires and fireworks. On this night, the British celebrate the anniversary of the failure of the Gunpowder Plot. This name was given to the attempted coup d'etat undertaken by Catholics, one of whom, named Guy Fawkes, tried to blow up the parliament building with gunpowder.

There was a tree (Christmastree) on the mountain,
And near this tree (

Bad wolves roamed.

Here once,
At night time
When the forest is so quiet
They meet the wolf under the mountain
Hare and hare.

Who is hunting in the New Year
Fall into the clutches of the wolf!
The hares rushed forward
And jumped on the tree (Christmastree).

They pressed their ears
They hung like toys.

Ten little bunnies
Hang on the tree (Christmastree) and are silent.
They deceived the wolf.
It was in January -
He thought that on the mountain
Decorated Christmas tree (

Equipment: projector, computer, multimedia presentation, audio recording of the song "I" m a LittleTeapot, a table set according to English rules, attributes of English tea drinking, cards with recipes for making tea and pastries.

The course of the event.
1. Organizational moment. Introductory speech of the teacher.
Teacher: Good morning, dear children! Today we "ll talk about English Tea: its history, its traditions, its ceremonies etc. I know you" ve read stories, some facts about English Tea. Certainly we "ll listen to you very carefully. And I see you have set the table according to the English traditions. It" s very nice.
2. From the history of the emergence of English tea drinking.
Student 1: “It's easier to imagine Britain without a queen than without tea,” the English joke. Tea in England is more than tea. Both the queen and ordinary Britons follow the traditions of his drinking. This is a special culture - from brewing to consumption; she has many followers and far beyond the island.
Disciple 2: In 1662, Prince Charles II married the Portuguese princess Catherine Braganza, who brought the tea habit to England. Tea was a success among the aristocracy and among other English citizens. The popularity of tea was formed slowly, but forever.
3. Traditions of English tea drinking.
Teacher: Traditionally the English drink tea six or seven times a day: in bed, at breakfast, at lunch, during the day and at 5 o "clock. Why is tea drinking so popular? Let" s try to answer to this question.
Student 3: Two centuries of the "afternoontea" tradition. This tradition is really only 200 years old! Duchess Anne invented it in 1830. And not that she came up with it. It's just that in the 19th century, breakfast was very early, and lunch was only served at 8 pm. And at about 12.00 the Duchess suddenly got hungry and ordered to bring her something to eat. This "Something" turned out to be tea! Anna liked this innovation so much that she soon began to invite her friends to the table.
Disciple 4: Very quickly, the elegant tea ceremony became very fashionable, and the 12-hour tea set was in great demand. This is how silver and porcelain serving items, trays and stands for pies appeared, as well as beautifully dressed servants, containers for storing tea, strainers, teapots and special tables for tea.
Disciple 5: At the beginning of the last century, the English tea ceremony was forgotten for a while, but now, in modern England, many important events and celebrations, such as a wedding or the baptism of a child, a birthday, are no longer forgotten if they are followed by the traditional aristocratic " afternoon tea. " I called him aristocratic for a reason. Everything is very simple! "Tea at noon" used to be the name for a light and graceful meal that was mostly enjoyed by the aristocracy with its leisurely lifestyle.
Student 6: The British drink tea several times a day. The earliest tea is called “EnglishBreakfast”. He arrives around eight. Then, eleven or twelve times, "lunch" happens there. "TeaBreak", i.e. tea break occurs in the middle of the working day. It's called “12-oclock-tea”. Fiveo'clocktea is the most popular and favorite tradition of drinking tea and eating pies with friends. After that, “HighTea” takes place in the evenings.
Student 7: The most famous English tea party is the five-o'clock, which is a five-hour tea party held throughout Britain. At this time, shops and institutions, offices and banks are closed - everyone is drinking tea. No manager would dare to forbid his subordinates to take a break for a cup of tea at five o'clock in the afternoon: such a step can have a very negative impact on relations within the team. Oddly enough, "five-o'clock" was introduced in the United Kingdom in 1851 forcibly - then the government was seriously concerned about the problem of the nation's addiction to alcohol. According to a special law, employees, workers, sailors were supposed to take a fifteen-minute tea break. Traditionally, five-hour tea is drunk with bread, butter, fresh cucumbers and tomatoes, eggs, various toasts, buns, jam and so on.
Student 8: The UK has a population of about 59 million. The British drink 165 million cups of tea every day. 98% of Britons drink tea with milk and only 30% of people drink tea with sugar. In the evening, the British gather for dinner with their families. During a hearty meal, the events of the day, news of politics and sports are discussed. Mild, soothing teas flavored with bergamot are especially popular at this time of day. The most famous "evening" tea is "Earl Gray" ("Earl Gray"). The recipe for this tea belongs to Charles Gray, a member of the British Parliament and an influential diplomat. English tea ends, as it begins, "in bed." Decaffeinated tea is drunk shortly before bed, as well as a variety of teas with fruit flavors.
4. Table setting for traditional tea drinking. Conversations at the table.
Teacher: They like strong tea. In England they say jokingly: "The test of good tea is simple. If the spoon stands up in it, then it is strong enough; if the spoon starts to wobble, it is a feeble makeshift".
So, for the traditional English tea drinking ceremony, we need:
A white or blue tablecloth - white or blue tablecloth
Cups and saucers - cups and saucers
Teaspoons - teaspoons
A jug with boiled water - a jug with boiled water
Teapot - teapot for making tea
Plates - plates
Napkins - napkins
Tea - tea
A tea strainer - tea strainer
Cakes - pies
Biscuits - cookies
Fruits - fruits
Sweets - sweets, candies
Jam - jam
Sugar - sugar
Milk - milk (some people like milk tea)
Student 9: Dishes from a single service - tea pairs, a teapot for tea, a jug for boiling water, a milk jug, dessert plates, forks, knives and teaspoons, a strainer with a stand, a sugar bowl (with refined sugar), tongs, and a woolen cover for a teapot (tea-cozy). A tea table, which could be located in the living room by the fireplace or in the garden, if the weather allowed. Classic tablecloths, white or blue, no patterns.
Student 10: Each guest chose his own type of tea, after which the brewing began. The teapot was rinsed with hot water, and 1 spoonful of tea leaves was poured for each guest. The tea leaves were infused for about five minutes, after which they were immediately poured into cups, and boiling water was added to the kettle. After the second brewing, the teapot was covered with a small case. The British drink exceptionally hot tea.
Teacher: Now let’s set the table for tea party. (Students demonstrate table setting)
1.You must cover the table with a white table-cloth. You must cover the table with a white table-cloth.
2. Put the tea-cups and saucers for every person. Place tea cups and saucers for each person.
3. Put a dessert plate for every person. Provide a dessert plate for each person.

8. Put a tea-pot with tea. Put a tea-pot with tea.
8. A tea-pot with boiled water. A tea-pot with boiled water.
9. Put the napkins. Put napkins down.
10. Take a tea-coz y to put on the tea-pot. Take the woolen cover by placing it on the kettle.
5. Recipe for making aromatic tea in the English tradition.
Student 11: Making real English tea turns out to be a whole science! The brewing procedure is very important: from the beginning, you need to rinse the teapot with warm water, then boil the water and pour in loose leaf tea, then let it brew for three to five minutes. When using loose leaf tea, the following rule should be followed - one teaspoon of heaped tea per cup of water, plus one teaspoon "per teapot".
Teacher: How let’s make English tea (Students show the process of making tea along the way)
1. In the warmed teapot, pour the tea leaves (1 teaspoon to a Cup of tea).
2. Pour the boiling water so that it covered the welding.
3. After 5 minutes, top up the kettle with boiling water.
4. Pour into cups cream (10-15% fat), tea, sugar.
5. Place a tea cozy on the teapot to keep the tea warm.
Teacher: I think this English tradition is a great way to spend time with friends in an elegant and special atmosphere. Pleasant conversation should take place during the tea ceremony. Many stories and legends, poems and songs have been written about this life-giving drink, such as, for example, a poem by Joanne Dix.
Student 12:
Why am I feeling so tired
I don’t really feel like me
I can’t keep my eyes open
Maybe I’ll have a cup of tea
Fresh teas a brewing
I can smell it stewing
I can’t wait a minute more
I start to pour into my cup
Student 13:
I cannot wait to supp
Fresh golden tea
Swirling around in my cup
I raise the tea to my lips
I take a few delightful sips
As the tea goes down
Away with my frown
Ah what a wonderful cup!
Teacher: Thank you for such a wonderful reading of the poem about the favorite drink of the British. The author expresses the warmest, unrestrained emotions about tea.
6. Competition of riddles about traditional tea drinking.
Teacher: So let's find words related to our subject. Let's see how you quickly find the words you know.

7. Closing remarks from the teacher.
Teacher: The British know how to make tea and what it does for you. Seven cups will wake you up in the morning and nine cups will put you to sleep at night. If you are hot, tea will cool you, and if you are cold, it will warm you. If you take it in the middle of the morning, it will stimulate you to further work; if you drink it daily, it will help you relax for further reflection.
Thank you very much for a cup of English tea. Goodbye!
In the end, the song "I`m a little tea pot" by D. H. Sanders, K. Kelly sounds.
Song lyrics:
I`m a little teapot, short and stout.
Here is my handle, here is my spout
When I get all steamed up, hear me shout.
Just tip me over and pour me out!

I`m a special teapot, yes it`s true.
Here let me show you what I can do.
I can change my handle and my spout
Just tip me over and pour me out.

Pupils give guests postcards in the form of teapots, tea pairs with recipes for English tea and pastries, and invite them to the table.

visually demonstrate to students the need to learn English,

show areas of professional activity and daily life where the use of English is required

Lesson equipment : Computer, projector, screen, speakers, free Internet access. Presentations "Book of records of the English language", "English-speaking countries", audio for presentations, attachments (handouts for participants). To complete assignments, the children will need pens and two suitcases. The jury needs pens and tables for evaluating the teams' records (Appendix for the jury), diplomas (Appendix "Diploma"), sweet prizes and souvenirs for awarding.

Preparatory stage : homework for the teams (come up with a name and prepare a song / dance), design posters with poems (Appendix # 1), demonstrating the importance of the English language. Choose two leading students from among the senior students, as well as determine the composition of the jury (4 people).

Leading:

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. We are delighted to welcome you to our annual English Learning Party.

It is not news that English is in the first place among foreign languages \u200b\u200band has long gone international. English is used everywhere today. The English language unites people, helps them gain knowledge from many sources.

In the event that you are still in doubt about learning English, then let us ________ (the names of the leaders) acquaint you with the English language records written in this book (demonstrates a huge book), which was written by students in grades 10-11. They have long recognized the importance of the English language.

Leading : We offer you an electronic version of the English language record book. We learned that some of the students in our school do not know why they need to learn English (survey results). Therefore, we invite the most doubtful students to the competition. We welcome students in grades 7-8. Please state the name of your teams. And now we welcome the distinguished jury, which included ________ (presentation of the jury). And, of course, we will greet all those present!

Leading :

Looking at the screen, you can finally decide for yourself - do you need to know English? We open our book (Presentation "Book of records of the English language") Slide №1

Presenter: Slide number 2 "Language of Education" . English is the most popular foreign language in schools. The most prestigious universities in the world are English-speaking. In countries where English is the second official language, students prefer to study in English. Knowledge of English provides an opportunity to get a good education and build a successful career.

If your family members have spoken English in the past, you may want to learn it yourself and teach your children in the future. Here, the benefit of knowing English may lie in the fact that when you study your ancestry, you may stumble upon some documents written in a language that is foreign to you. Let's imagine that your distant relatives were residents of the British Isles and left you a very important message that needs to be deciphered and translated correctly. (Appendix No. 2)

Leading : The next page of our English record book is called"Language of Science and Technology" ... (slide number 3)English has become the language of the 21st century - the century of technological progress and information technology. Today, all instructions and programs for new gadgets are written in English. Scientific reports, articles, reports are published in English. 90% of Internet resources are in English. The overwhelming majority of information in all areas - science, sports, news, entertainment - is published in English. English is the key to the world of science, because it is by communicating with people from all over the world, participating in international competitions and conferences, visiting foreign research centers, you can learn about new scientific discoveries.

Our foreign colleague Mr. Brown has prepared his task for the teams. He is interested to know if the students of our school will be able to remember the names of great scientists and their inventions. (Appendix # 3) In total, you can earn 5 points by filling out the table correctly. (The jury calculates the points and enters the teams into the table of records)

Leading : Slide number 4- that's the name of our next page. Large-scale travels of the British over two centuries have borne fruit. In the 21st century, English is the language of travel. Whatever country you go to, you will be understood in English everywhere. At the hotel, in the restaurant, at the bus stop, you can talk to the locals.

Even a minimal knowledge of English will help you "hold out" in a foreign country: buy food, get to the right place, buy tickets, etc. If you are fluent in English, then you will be able to communicate with new people, have an unforgettable time.

Leading : Let us travel a little with you. Attention to the screen. (Presentation "English-speaking countries") You must have noticed that we made a short virtual trip to different countries. Could you name these countries? (team responses) Right, these are USA, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. What unites all these countries? (students make assumptions) Of course - English. All these countries belong to English-speaking countries, since English is the official language there. But these countries also have differences. For example: different flags, national anthems, national symbols and traditions.

Leading : The inhabitants of these countries have sent you very interesting tasks. Be smart. Here are the names of countries and their attractions. But here's the problem, while the assignment was delivered to us, some letters from the names of the countries disappeared. Your task is to insert the missing letters and connect the name of the country with its attraction. (Appendix No. 4)

In the meantime, the jury is summing up the results, we will dream up a little. Oh, if only you could now be on the Cote d'Azur of Miami or visit the London Zoo. It would be nice to walk through the streets of Sydney. But do not forget about the most important thing, about the suitcase. What do you need to take with you on the road? Now our teams will get together on a trip to English-speaking countries in 1 minute.

Leading : Teams of 5 people line up at the start, opposite, 4 meters from them, there are suitcases and cards with words. The first players, on a signal, run after the suitcases, return to the team and pass the baton to the next player. This player runs to the cards. You can only take one card at a time. The player then returns to the team, the card is placed in the suitcase and the relay continues until time runs out. The task of the participants is to choose only those words that denote things necessary for travel. The team with the most correct cards per minute wins. (Appendix No. 5)

Leading : It's time to move on to the next page of our English language record book. Slide number 5"English is the language of youth". Tell me, do you agree with me? (students share their points of view) You're right. English has become the language of youth culture. American actors and actresses, musicians have been and remain idols of more than one generation of people. Hollywood is the undisputed leader of the film industry today. Cult American action films and blockbusters are watched in English all over the world. Now our participants will compete in guessing the names of the films from several fragments. (Appendix No. 6) Teams need to write movie titles on cards. The jury will calculate the correct answers and announce the preliminary results.

Leading : From America came jazz, blues, rock and roll, and many other styles of music that are still popular today. Which one of you doesn't like to dance? Breakdancing, Hip-hop, Vogue ... there are many directions. And again, dances came to us from English-speaking countries. The teams' creative homework assignment was to prepare a musical number. The first team was drawn by lot to perform the legendary song of the British bandtheBeatlesYesterday”. (student performance is assessed by the jury) (Appendix # 7) The second team has prepared for you a choreographic number in the style of Breakdance. Greetings with thunderous applause. (Dance number is performed). Dance music link http://iplayer.fm/q/bomfunk+mc+s+freestyler+1999/. Thanks to the teams for the wonderful performances. Please take your seats.

Leading : And finally, the last page: Slide number 6"English is a universal language" ... English is an understandable language. We can understand many words without translation, because they have become international. In 2 minutes, write as many words as possible that have fallen into our language from English. (whoever is bigger wins this competition) for example:computer, doctor , football, printer, telephone, internet

Leading : I ask you guys to speculate and summarize why it is worth learning English (guys' versions: language is important for getting a good education, for traveling and making new acquaintances, for exchanging information around the world without using a dictionary, for watching films in the original and etc.). In addition to all of the above, English is beautiful, melodic and easy to learn. English has one of the richest vocabularies in the world, yet it has an uncomplicated grammar. Words themselves are attracted to each other, forming concise and understandable sentences. The international language should be simple and understandable for everyone. Perhaps we are very lucky that it was just such a simple language that united the world. Today we can say with confidence that in the 21st century English is the # 1 international language. How long it will remain international is difficult to say. But, definitely, this status will remain for more than one decade.

Leading : Thank you for playing, now our esteemed jury will sum up the results and we will hold an awards ceremony. (the jury sums up the results, the guys receive diplomas and sweet prizes, as well as souvenirs with the symbols of Great Britain: pens, key chains and calendars)

P. S : at the request of the organizers of the extracurricular event, you can take a photo for memory; leave in the book of records of the English language on the last page of the record about their reasons for learning English and the signatures of the participants as a keepsake; arrange a tea ceremony and sing your favorite songs in English together.

Yesterday
Original lyrics by The Beatles
Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they "re here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday

Suddenly,
I "m not half the man I used to be
There "s a shadow hanging over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly

She wouldn "t say
I said something wrong,
Now I long for yesterday

Yesterday,

Oh, I believe in yesterday

Why she had to go I don "t know,
She wouldn "t say
I said something wrong,
Now I long for yesterday

Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
