Wind and moisture protection membrane. DIY windproof membrane for your home.

Almost every building needs high-quality insulation, even if it is. This is a real axiom in the construction world. Houses need to be insulated, since initially their structures are not able to withstand temperature changes and quickly freeze in the cold season.

However, it is not enough just to decorate the walls with insulation. It is necessary to create a real heat-insulating cake, an important role in which is played by a wind and moisture-proof or just a moisture-proof film.

Now we will figure out what a moisture-proof film is using the example of Izospan products. In particular, the goods Izospan A and Izospan AM, together with.

1 Features of Izospan film

Izospan has been producing insulating materials for a very long time. In the market, they have managed to establish themselves with the best side... Therefore, there is no doubt about the quality of their products.

The main line of products from this manufacturer is a special protective film. There is a film Izospan A, Izospan B, Izospan C, etc. There is a difference between these materials and you need to pay attention to it.

Though worth noting interesting fact, there are practically no visual differences between the films of model A and C. Their sizes are also the same.

It remains to rely on specifications and the very scope of destination. If we evaluate insulation from the point of view of its properties, the difference between different materials become apparent.

1.1 Differences between materials

So, the Izospan A film is wind and moisture-proof, that is, it functions as a heater limiter. Do not be mistaken, arguing that the windshield of thermal insulation is not needed. Just the opposite.

The wind is a very serious irritant. Unlike ordinary moisture or steam, it constantly affects the surrounding structures. And modern heaters (the same mineral wool or foam) do not have sufficient density, therefore they are exposed to external loads.

Slowly but surely the wind will erode the strength of the material until it completely destroys it.

With moisture, the situation is different, but this is probably clear to everyone. A waterproof film is a real must. After all, it is moisture-proof insulation that allows you to limit the insulation from water entering it.

And, by the way, remove water from already installed slabs isolation is extremely difficult. If your designs are not ventilated, then it is completely impossible. As you can see, the wind and moisture protection film performs extremely useful functions.

Izospan B moisture-proof membrane, as it already concentrates on slightly other tasks. Here, the main emphasis is on protecting the insulation from steam penetration. Its thickness, as a rule, is less, but the cost is also significantly lower.

Many are interested in the question of whether there is a difference between the isolation of Izospan A and AM. Indeed, if you only look at technical properties, then the materials appear to be identical.

However, there are still some differences. It is enough to look at the product certificate, which indicates the full technical characteristics and the purpose of the material.

Initially, the Izospan A membrane has a high density and it is additionally protected from damage during installation. Therefore, the manufacturer recommends using it mainly for wall decoration. Especially for work in ventilated insulation frames.

But Izospan AM is slightly weaker in terms of strength, which forces the user to use it in places with less stress. As a result, the AM model is almost ideal for roofing.

1.2 Properties and parameters

Now it is worth evaluating the technical characteristics directly, as well as its interesting nuances. But first, we note that all the properties described further are those when you use the products that have received the certificate.

All Izospan products have a certificate of conformity. Therefore, when buying, you have the right to demand a certificate from the seller, thereby wanting to make sure that they are not trying to slip a fake on you.

The certificate of conformity is issued by state authorities and contains information about the product, its quality mark, etc. Also, the certificate allows you to make sure that the ingredients declared on the package are actually present in the membrane.

It would seem, why such excessive caution? It's just isolation. But in fact, you need to understand that insulation has no less weight in the structure than the same insulation.

You can buy an expensive mineral wool insulation and decorate all structures with it, hoping for a miracle. But if you do not install at least an ordinary wind and moisture protection membrane, then after a few years serious problems may begin.

2 Production features

The wind and moisture protection membrane is manufactured using proprietary equipment in the workshops of the Izospan company. It is made from dense polypropylene. Moreover, the polymer is used mixed with a bunch chemical components how in .

Just do not be afraid, there is nothing harmful in it. These components only contribute to the strengthening of the material and its durability. So, the Izospan membrane of the AM model, due to the presence of a separate class of polymers in it, has a much higher density than that of competitors' products.

But the AM model is far from the most durable sample from the Izospan line.

Another important point is the two-layer coating of the film. Rather, it has two sides. That is, the membrane has a different coating on each side.

One side is moisture-repellent. It is mounted outside from the insulation. It is smooth and very durable, designed to protect against wind and moisture. The wind cannot blow through such a polymer, and the water simply flows down through it, where it is removed along the drainage branches.

The second side is moisture-retaining, rough. It is she who is directed towards the insulation. Its task is to collect condensate, because the membrane is vapor-permeable. On a rough surface, condensation is retained and then eroded without affecting the insulation inside.

Actually, this is the unique characteristics of the Izospan film. On the one hand, it completely protects the insulation from moisture. On the other hand, it delays it, preventing it from flowing into the insulation.

This combination was able to win the trust of builders around the world. Better only.

2.1 Installation procedure

Consider the procedure for laying the membrane. It is worth noting that it has its own for each design. Unlike a vapor-proof film, the wind and moisture protection membrane is vapor-permeable, that is, it does not block vapor.

Rather, it performs the function of external isolation. A kind of limiter and external fence for insulation boards.

Accordingly, you need to mount it in a certain place.

Initially, any thermal insulation threshold consists of the following layers:

 • Base;
 • Vapor barrier;
 • Insulation;
 • Waterproofing;
 • Lathing;
 • Facial material.

It is at the place of waterproofing Izospan A that they are mounted. But here it is also important to note a few nuances.

For example, when finishing facades, the material is mounted directly on the insulation, then covered with special strips or not fixed with a frame at all. You can do with solid fixing with a construction stapler.

But the finishing of the roof is already going through a slightly different procedure. Here, the membrane must be placed immediately under the cavity of the rafters or panels of the roofing structure. Then the frame or the insulation itself is already laid.

3 Installation technology

A moisture-proof membrane is laid in a simple procedure. Here it is only important to close up all the joints with high quality and make sure that there are no holes left in the material.

Stages of work:

 1. We unpack the film.
 2. Cut if necessary.
 3. We carry out the installation of insulation, starting from the lower level of the structure.
 4. We mount each level above the previous one, observing the overlap.
 5. We fix the film with a stapler.
 6. We glue all joints with protective tape.

Don't skimp on the membrane. Try to cover each next layer with a film with a length of at least 20 cm. This will allow you to completely get rid of the possibility of leaking structures.

The front cover is already stuffed on top of the slats. Thus, you will be able to organize something like a ventilated gap, which will facilitate the evaporation of liquid on the membrane.

However, it should be noted that in the case of working with Izospan A or AM insulation, compliance with the presence of a normal air gap is not always fully required. Very often you can do without it. But it is better, of course, not to abuse such decisions, unless you live in a very dry climate.

3.1 Instructions for use of the Izospan A membrane (video)

The wind and moisture protection membrane is one of the inner layers of the frame cake. In everyday life, it is called waterproofing, although the functionality of a hydro-windproof vapor-permeable film (not to be confused with vapor barrier) is much broader than the usual protection against condensation.

First, a hydro-windproof membrane is placed inside any surfaces, protecting floors, walls and roofs from harmful moisture. The foundation and the roof are protected with a special material.

Secondly, it protects thermal insulation and other materials inside the frame from rain, snow, wind. We recommend using strong, reliable and durable Izospan as a vapor barrier. We use it to protect the roof (cold and warm), walls, floors of residential and commercial buildings.

Membrane in frame wall

Benefits of Izospan windscreen

We install the membrane under the roof or in front of the outer wall cladding, laying it on the outer side of the insulation. The material is a thin film, the outer side of which is smooth and water-repellent. The inner surface has a rough structure. It retains water droplets on itself, which are then eroded by the air flow. The moisture-proof membrane does not allow condensate to pass inside - as a result, moisture does not penetrate into the insulation and into the deeper layers of the frame wall. They do not get wet, the slab insulation does not settle or swell from excess moisture, keeping a lot of heat for the house for at least 50 years.

Pitched roof furniture

Izospan A increases the quality of thermal protection and extends its service life. Low price, light weight, ease of installation, low cost of a modern polymer - these are the characteristics of Izospan membrane insulation, thanks to which it has become the most demanded material in comparison with other types.

Advantages of membrane hydro-wind protection:

 • Ease of installation: it is a roll material that is convenient to transport. 2 people are capable of placing on the surface and performing the fastening;
 • Lack of toxic substances in the composition;
 • Long service life without loss of quality;
 • Resistance to biological environment, chemicals, moisture.

The moisture and windproof membrane is an environmentally friendly non-flammable film. Its use reduces the fire hazard of the entire structure.

In the construction of an insulated roof, IZOSPAN films are used for the following purposes:

 1. vapor barrier
 2. wind and moisture protection
 3. separation of layers of insulation

Accordingly, to accomplish these different tasks, IZOSPAN films with completely different structures and characteristics are used.

1) IZOSPAN for roof vapor barrier

IZOSPAN vapor barrier films are used to protect the insulation layer and other enclosing elements of the roof from the penetration of vapors from the inside of the room. To accomplish this task, vapor barrier films must have a minimum vapor permeability. In addition, the IZOSPAN vapor barrier protects the interior space of the room from the penetration of dust and small particles of insulation.

The most common material for the vapor barrier of the under-roof space is Izospan V.

Also, for the purpose of vapor barrier of the lined roof, the following IZOSPAN materials can be used: Izospan RS, Izospan C or Izospan DM. The layout of these IZOSPAN materials is similar to the installation of Izospan V.

To provide additional heat saving, reflective metallized materials "Izospan FS", "Izospan FD" and "Izospan FX" can be used.

Installation instructions for roof vapor barrier using the example of IZOSPAN B

The Izospan V vapor barrier is installed on the inside of the insulation. Izospan B is fastened with a stapler to the rafters or along the rough sheathing - a rough surface inside the room. The panels are laid from bottom to top with an overlap of at least 15 cm (along vertical and horizontal seams). Additionally, Izospan B is fixed with profiles or a wooden lath, depending on the material interior decoration premises. The thickness of these profiles determines the ventilation gap (4-5 cm). Isospan-V fits tightly to the insulation.

The tightness of the vapor barrier is ensured by gluing the joints of the panels together with Izospan KL or Izospan SL connecting tape. It is recommended to glue the joints of the vapor barrier to the supporting structures with Izospan ML proff adhesive tape.

Reflective hydro-vapor barrier made of metallized materials IZOSPAN is laid in the same way, with the only feature that the reflective surface, of course, faces the inside of the room, because its main purpose is to reflect the heat flow back, allowing you to additionally save the cost of heating the building. It is recommended to seal the canvases with Izospan FL metallized tape.

Izospan FX is an exception in the general scheme of laying the IZOSPAN vapor barrier, the panels of which are laid “end-to-end” with the obligatory gluing of the abutment points with the “Izospan FL” connecting metallized tape.

2) IZOSPAN for wind and moisture protection of the roof

Wind moisture protection is a set of measures aimed at protecting the roof structure and insulation, in particular, from weathering and getting wet. Weathering reduces the heat-insulating qualities of the roof. The wetting of the insulation drastically reduces its heat-insulating properties, and the elements of the supporting structure as a result of exposure to moisture (under-roof condensate and the flow of atmospheric moisture due to poor-quality installation of the main roof covering) leads to the formation of fungal infection, mold and, as a result, premature corrosion and destruction.

Naturally, in practice, it will still not be possible to completely isolate the insulation and bearing structures roofs from moisture penetration. Therefore, materials for under-roof waterproofing, in addition to preventing the penetration of moisture from the outside, must ensure its free evaporation to the outside. In Europe, such materials are called "breathable films", which translates as "breathable films", which determines the main property of these materials. In the USA, such materials are called differently - "housewrap", which translates as "house wrapper" - which, in principle, also quite clearly characterizes their purpose.

Depending on the vapor permeability indicators, wind and moisture protection materials are divided into:

 • proper wind and moisture protection films - vapor permeability 20-300 g / m2 / day,
 • diffusion membranes with vapor permeability from 400 to 1000 g / m² per day,
 • superdiffusion membranes - from 1000 g / m² per day and above.

All these materials can be used as wind and moisture protection for insulated roofs, but in different ways.

Wind-moisture protective films are laid with the organization of a mandatory double ventilation gap - one above the film, and the other between the film and the thermal insulation layer ("Option_№1").

Diffusion membranes and superdiffusion membranes, due to their quality of excellent vapor permeability and good waterproofing, can be laid directly on the insulation layer. ("Option # 2" - RECOMMENDED !!!).

Option number 1

Izospan films for wind and moisture protection and under-roof waterproofing:

 • Izospan A
 • Izospan DM

"Izospan A" can be used as a waterproofing windproof roofing vapor permeable membrane in insulated roofs with different types coatings with an angle of inclination greater than 35 degrees. It is not allowed to use IZOSPAN-A as a main or temporary roof! Laying "Izospan A" or its operation during precipitation is unacceptable.

The use of the Izospan DM film is optimal in the case of using a metal roof covering. Izospan DM is used as an under-roof waterproofing (does not allow water vapor to pass through).

When using Izospan-A or Izospan-DM, it is necessary in any case to observe a gap of 4-5 cm between them and the insulation. In the case of Izospan-A, this is dictated by the fact that contact of the inner surface of Izospan A with a heater or solid wooden structures leads to a decrease in the waterproofing capacity of the Izospan A membrane. And in case of using "Izospan DM", it is necessary to ensure the removal of steam from the insulation along the ventilated gap, because IZOSPAN DM film is vapor-proof.

Installation instructions for waterproofing and wind and moisture protection IZOSPAN

When installing an insulated roof, waterproofing and wind-moisture protection IZOSPAN is rolled out and cut over the roofing rafters above the insulation. Installation is carried out with overlapping horizontal panels, smooth side outward, starting from the bottom of the roof. The overlap of panels along horizontal and vertical joints is at least 15 cm. The stretched material is fixed on the rafters or along an additional rail with vertical antiseptic wooden counter-rails 4x5 cm on nails or screws with a slight sag (no more than 2 cm). On the counter-rails, a crate or a solid boardwalk is mounted, depending on the type of roofing.

The lower edge of the laid IZOSPAN waterproofing carpet should provide a natural drain of moisture from the film surface into the gutter. For the weathering of water vapor and condensate, it is important that the under-roof space is ventilated. For this, ventilation openings are provided in the lower part of the roof and in the upper part (in the area of the ridge) for free air circulation.

When installing the counter rail along the rafters in the places of its attachment, self-tapping screws (nails) damage the integrity of the Izospan panels. Through these attachment points, moisture generated in the under-roof space can flow onto the insulation and wooden structures... Therefore, it is recommended to use "IZOSPAN Self-Adhesive Sealing Tape" for sealing the counter-batten attachment points.

In the case of using Izospan DM under-roof waterproofing, to organize the ventilation flow between the film and the insulation, a ventilation cut must be made along the ridge!

Option number 2

 • Izospan AM
 • Izospan AS

Diffusion membranes IZOSPAN provide high reliability and durability of the roof structure.

In addition, diffusion membranes "Izospan AM" and "Izospan AS" are laid directly on the insulation (without ventilation gap), and this greatly simplifies the roof structure and avoids additional costs.

Installation instructions for diffusion membranes IZOSPAN

The brands Izospan AM and Izospan AS are used as a vapor-permeable roofing membrane for waterproofing and wind protection in insulated roofs with different types of coverings and slope angles. The IZOSPAN membrane is laid directly above the insulation without a gap on top of the roof rafters under the crate. Correct laying of Izospan AM (Izospan AS) is done with a white surface - to the insulation.

Purpose of the IZOSPAN diffusion membrane:

 • protection of insulation and elements of the roofing structure from condensation,
 • wind protection,
 • protection from snow and atmospheric moisture in case of slanting rain in case of improper installation of the roof covering,
 • helps to remove moisture from the insulation.

Izospan AM and Izospan AS films cannot be used as a main or temporary roofing coating.

When installing an insulated roof, Izospan AM (Izospan AS) is laid and cut directly on top of the insulation. IZOSPAN membranes are laid with overlapping horizontal panels, starting from the bottom of the roof. The horizontal and vertical overlap of the canvases is at least 15 cm. The IZOSPAN wind-moisture protective membrane is preliminarily fixed on the rafters with a construction stapler in a taut position. Further, on the rafters above the membrane, wooden counter-rails 4x5 cm (pre-treated with an antiseptic) are vertically mounted. The place of the vertical overlap of two horizontal panels must be pressed against the rafters by the counter-rail. A crate or solid flooring is mounted along the counter-rails, depending on the type of roofing. The thickness of the counter batten (4-5 cm) determines the height of the mandatory ventilation gap between the outer side of the Izospan AM (Izospan AS) material and the roof covering.

In addition, to ensure good ventilation of the under-roof space in the lower part of the roof and in the area of the ridge, ventilation holes are provided for air circulation. The lower edge of the "carpet" from Izospan AM (Izospan AS) should provide a natural drain of moisture from the membrane surface into the gutter.

Roll-on vapor waterproofing systems are widely used in building construction. For example, consider the system of a domestic manufacturer of materials under the Izospan trademark.

Izospan is precisely a system of materials, the complex use of various brands of which solves all problems with hydro and vapor barrier of ceilings, roofs and walls that arise during the construction of buildings and structures.

Each individual roll of material of any brand of the Izospan system has detailed instructions for use and clear wiring diagrams.

Materials of the Izospan system have a price one and a half to two times lower than that of imported analogues (Tyvek, Yutafol).

Vapor permeable membranes

Vapor-permeable membranes are used to protect against wind, moisture drops, snow (blown under the roof or cladding) in the structures of roofs, ceilings and walls.

The membrane does not allow moisture from the external environment to penetrate into the building structure. At the same time, the membrane is permeable to water vapor, which allows moisture to be removed from the structures protected by the membrane.

Paro aboutwear membranes always installed on the outside, outside in relation to the heated room, the side of the insulation.

Izospan A and Izospan A with OZD - is a micro-perforated polypropylene film, one side of which has a water-repellent smooth surface.

The inner side has a rough anti-condensation structure, designed to delay condensate with the subsequent evaporation of its droplets in the air flow. The water resistance of the material is maintained provided that the film does not touch any other surfaces.

Izospan A is used in roofs with roof slope angles greater than 35 °. When installing a roof using Izospan A membrane, it is necessary to provide a ventilated gap on both sides of the membrane. The stretched film should not touch other surfaces.

The need to create additional ventilation ducts, which increases the cost of the structure, is a disadvantage of this material. During installation in roof structures, the film does not protect the underlying surfaces from precipitation.

Izospan A with OZD Is isospan A with flame retardants. It is used to cover mineral wool insulation of walls with ventilated facades as a vapor-permeable wind barrier. Installation of the material is carried out directly on the insulation, without a gap. With such an installation, the water resistance of the film decreases sharply, which in this case is quite acceptable.

Izospan A is produced in rolls with a width of 1.4 or 1.6 m., In a roll of 35 or 70 m2. The price of a roll of Izospan A 70m2 is 1500 rubles. A roll of Izospan A with OZD costs 1,700 rubles. (tentatively for September 2012)

Izospan AM and Izospan AS - diffusion three-layer vapor-permeable membranes.

The Izospan AM (AS) membrane protects the roofing or facade structure not only from atmospheric moisture and condensation, but also from the wind. Membrane Izospan AM (AS) has better water resistance than Izospan A.

The most important advantages of diffusion membranes of this type include the possibility of laying them directly on top of the heat-insulating layer, without a ventilation gap between the membrane and this layer. The creation of such a gap, as is known, requires additional expenditures of time, funds and materials, and the presence of a diffusion membrane frees from such a need. This makes it possible to reduce the cost of the entire structure, as well as to simplify and speed up its installation.

Installation of Izospan AM (AS) material can be carried out in any weather on wall and roof structures of the most different types - such as pitched roofs and attics, frame walls, externally insulated walls and ventilated façade systems. In the same time, diffusion membrane is not independent roofing material and it is prohibited to use it for the manufacture of temporary roofing.

The diffusion membrane Izospan AM (AS) functions normally at temperatures from -60 to +80 degrees and can serve for 50 years or more without losing its functional qualities.

The width of the Izospan AM material is 1.6m., 35 or 70m2 in a roll. The price of a roll of 70m2 is 2000 rubles. (tentatively for September 2012)

The width of the Izospan AS material is 1.6m., 70m2 per roll. The price of a roll is 3000 rubles. (tentatively for September 2012)

Nanoizol A is a modern wind and moisture protection material that is used in the construction and reconstruction of walls and roofs of buildings for any purpose. It is a membrane with sides different in texture: the inner side is rough, and the outer side is smooth. The rough surface retains condensate drops until they evaporate and thereby protects the insulation and other materials from humidification by vapors coming from the premises. The outer (smooth) surface has water-repellent properties, prevents the penetration of moisture from the external environment into other structural elements. Membrane Nanoizol A is mounted on the outside of the insulation, under the roofing or external finishing material of the wall. Its use improves the thermal insulation properties of the insulation and helps to extend the life of the building as a whole.

The vapor-permeable wind-moisture protective membrane Nanoisol A is made from modern polymers. This material has a number of advantages over traditional counterparts:

 • high reliability, tensile strength;
 • environmental friendliness - the membrane during operation does not emit substances harmful to the body;
 • convenience and ease of use;
 • high resistance to chemical compounds and biological factors (bacteria, mold, etc.);
 • long service life.

Nanoizol A can be used as a wind- and moisture-proof material in the construction of insulated roofs with a slope of 35 ° or more. The membrane is suitable for roofs with any coating:, soft roof, profiled sheets, etc. Installation is carried out over the rafters above the insulation, with a ventilation gap. A crate is installed on top of the membrane. In insulated roofs, Nanoizol A serves to protect the heat-insulating material and load-bearing elements from wind, dirt, dust, moistening with under-roof condensate and moisture from the external environment.

In the construction of low-rise buildings, the Nanoizol A membrane is used in the construction of walls with external insulation: from a bar, frame, panel board, as well as combined ones. It serves to protect materials from wind and moisture. It is used for external wall insulation with any external cladding: clapboard, etc. Installation is carried out from the outside of the insulation, under the external finishing material of the wall.

Nanoisol A is used to protect insulation in structures of ventilated building facades with external insulation. Protecting the insulation from the effects of cold air, wind, moisture and snow penetrating into the ventilated gap under the outer cladding.

In ventilated facades:

When laying on the roof, Nanoizol A is rolled horizontally over the insulation and rafters, the smooth side of the material should be facing outward. The membrane is cut directly on the roof. The canvases are laid from bottom to top with an overlap. The width of the overlaps on the horizontal joints should be at least 15 cm, on the vertical joints - 20 cm. A 7-8 cm wide ventilation gap should be left between the canvases near the ridge.Fix the membrane with wooden counter-rails to the rafters, use screws or nails as fasteners. A solid flooring or crate is mounted on the counter-battens (depending on the roofing used). To ensure the evaporation of condensate between the membrane and thermal insulation material leave a ventilation gap 2-4 cm wide. A ventilation gap for the thickness of the lathing is also provided between the roofing and the membrane.

Euromet's specialists recommend fixing the membrane in a taut position. It should not sag more than 2 cm between the rafters and come into contact with insulation or other surfaces. This can lead to a deterioration in its waterproofing properties. Nanoisol A is placed so that moisture flows freely from the membrane surface along the lower edge into the gutter. To ensure evaporation of condensate and weathering of water vapor, the roof space is made ventilated. Air is circulated through the ventilation holes in the ridge area and at the bottom of the roof.

Euromet recalls that Nanoisol A is not intended for use as a roof covering. For temporary shelter of building structures, the Nanoisol D membrane can be used.

In the construction of walls with external insulation, Nanoizol A is mounted between the insulation and the outer wall cladding. The membrane is laid on the outside of the insulation on wooden frame, smooth surface outward. The canvases are placed horizontally, at the joints they should overlap each other by at least 10-15 cm. The material is fixed to the frame with galvanized nails or with a construction stapler. On top of the membrane, wooden counter-battens are fixed, which ensure the creation of a 4-5 cm wide ventilation gap between it and the outer wall cladding. finishing material (siding, lining, etc.). Along the lower edge of the membrane, water should drain freely into the drain.
